Did you miss this part? QuoteI spent nearly two weeks off of work. For 11 days, I could not eat. I experienced 4 days of fever, two trips to the ER, 4 bags of IV fluid, numerous pain killers and nearly two weeks of pain. My throat was so swollen and felt so much like razor blades that I could not swallow. I was spitting into a bucket in order to not have to. My mouth was also swollen and covered in nodules. I got a bacterial infection on my lips as well. I lost 9 pounds. My mouth is still sensitive because I could not brush for the entire period. My lips are also still recovering and are sore. I am sure the genital version is similarly unpleasant. I'd say that for 11 days, it was a pretty big fucking deal for Rob. I think you should consider yourself lucky if you haven't had the misfortune of having an outbreak like that. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
Conundrum 1 #30 April 10, 2007 I have never had a cold sore and I don't think my fiance has either, but I don't know for sure. I won't kiss anyone (friends/family) if they have any sores on their mouth. If either my fiance or I have it, we haven't had an outbreak yet. I'm sorry to hear about your ordeal and I'm glad you're doing ok.
skydiver30960 0 #31 April 10, 2007 Absolutely, and as I mentioned in the first line of my post, I'm really sorry that his outbreak was so awful. (I guess YOU missed that part) Hell, I jump with the guy. So even more so that with your average dz.com poster, and as someone who has dealt with the issue for the better part of two decades now, I can identify with his pain. I guess I could have been more clear. With the exception of really nasty outbreaks like his, which was probably brought on by (as his doctor mentioned to him) the fact that his oral cavity was already taxed by the orthodontic issues, most people live with this every day without any adverse effects. Sorry if I offended, I truly am. I'll say it more clearly: Rob, your description paints a nasty picture and I'm sorry you had to go through with it. I hope you never have to go through it again. My goal was not to belittle his ordeal, but to try to calm him and help him realize that this is really something that he can (hopefully, in all likelihood) overcome with little or no change in his overall lifestyle. Also, to try to temper some of the rampant social attitude (i.e. cold sores = the black plague) about the illness and help others realize how truly common the illness is. sharimcm 0 #32 April 10, 2007 I honestly thought the world's population had HSV-1. I've had that thought in my head since I was in grade school. I, thankfully, never had an outbreak of any sorts, but it sounds like it can be something that can be very painful in some cases. I'm sorry to hear about your ordeal, but I'm glad you're better now. I'm also glad that you have shared the information with us. GTAVercetti 0 #33 April 10, 2007 I did not ask a question, except for how people handle it themselves. The herpes that causes chicken pox is not the same as HSV-1 and 2. It is herpes foster. And cannot be transferred to genitalia. It can remanifest as shingles though. I do appreciate the post though. I mentioned the 50-80% in my own post so I am aware of how common it is. My purpose here, as I stated, was to find out how many people are aware of what oral herpes can do...particulary in transference to the genitals. It was not meant to show it as something horrible and evil. After all, I have it now and I am hardly evil (mostly). And yes, I am frustrated right now, but I am also confident I will get over it BECAUSE it is so prevalent. But being common does not mean we should be unaware of the issues. The condition of PRIMARY HERPES (that is, the first time you encounter the virus) is often quite bad with fever, sore throat, difficulty eating, etc. Many people don't experiece a bad primary version (or they do as babies and don't remember). In addition, if you suddenly experience just a cold sore one day, you probably already had it. My experience was FAR more than what you might see on someone's face for just a cold sore, because of the complete lack of antibodies in me. Thanks for the post. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.
ChasingBlueSky 0 #34 April 11, 2007 Quote Part of the stigma of the disease is that, supposedly, it is a "sexually transmitted disease." I've read that most people actually contract it in infancy and childhood, when everybody wants to kiss the little baby I was born with a sub-standard immune system, having to fight off massive infections since birth (I've lost count of how many 104 degree temperatures I've had in my life). I picked up chicken pox as an infant and have known of cold sores my entire life. I never knew you could have such an outbreak as GTA posted since a cold sore is the only thing I get when/if they happen. Usually they are kicked off at high stress times or at times when my immune system is lower than usuall. I can go years without one, or I can get 2 in three months. You can ALWAYS tell when one is coming as it causes a very uncomfortable tingling in your lip that doesn't stop until it flares up. But as Elvisio said, they are very common and most people I know have gotten them. With a little bit of education and a visit to your doctor you know how to handle them and if you need any med's to help with the flare up._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
