WFFC location?

Recommended Posts

It seems that the folks in Quincy, Illinois have caught wind of the 2007 cancellation of the World Free Fall Convention. Now they are speculating on whether or not we are coming back to their town.
They are having a poll in their newspaper to see how their townspeople think (front page, lower right hand corner), and we are wondering what YOU the skydiver thinks. After all, the WFFC has always been for and about you. Le us know your thoughts.

Another Gem City Landing?

QUINCY - It was an event that attracted thousands of people from around the world to the Gem City and then it moved to a different location -- Rantoul.

Now there's a chance Quincy could host the World Free Fall Convention once again, but one city official is voicing his strong opposition to its return.

According to the Quincy Herald Whig....Mayor John Spring says, quote..."The World Free Fall event is not the type of event that our city or region desires".

Executive Director of the Quincy Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Rob Ebbing, was heavily involved in the skydiving event in the '90's.

Now, it's his job to try and lure big events such as the Free Fall Convention to Quincy to fill hotels.

He says it's a shame city leaders don't want it.

The convention moved to Rantoul in 2002 after a rash of complaints during Quincy's last convention in 2001.

Complaints which included public disturbances, nudity and underage drinking at the event.

The Whig also reports Mayor Spring says it's a homeland security issue to host the convention at the airport as well, especially in a post 9-11 world.

I loved Rantoul the 2 years I got to go. I'd like to see it stay in the same general part of the country. Try to keep it within one state in any direction.

I will never go back in my former capacity so long as I have to pay a vendor fee of any kind. I get paid to show up or am at least comped jump tickets at other boogies. It's one thing to pay rent for your tent, but it's a different matter entirely to pay $900 just to fly your banner at a booth.

BWAHAHA. You'd definately have to organise alternative entertainment, just in case! But when the UK summer gets rolling its normally pretty fearsome. Especially the last few years. Been scorchers. I'd love to see a big event like that in the UK though. Maybe take over one of the wannabe airports for a few days like Manston or Lydd.

Take over a airfield sounds Like Dublin the weather here would be to unpredictable but say somewhere like Spain. lets face it Europe has nothing on this scale anymore, Probably crying out for something this size as well

The Uk is far to restictive to host this type of event with that kind off variety of aircraft. Thats my honest opinion:|

Yes, I sometimes forget that America is the world :D

Somewhere more convenient for the European skydivers would be great. Tickets to your slums in the states cost a fortune. Whereas with the cheap air travel anyone in Europe can go anywhere else in Europe for no more than £50 return. Spain would rock B|

Put your money up then.

What is/are the percentage of skydivers in the world by location - do the math - the boogie wouldn't be the same size, and the fuel and lift tickets would be more expensive . . . it just doesn't make good business sense.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

Europe is packed with skydivers, just because they don't post on DZ.com doesn't mean there aren't any. Go to somewhere like Emp and you got all sorts of nationalities. Its great. Its a hub of european skydiving. You have a valid point with regards to cost though. Because we are charged so much for jump tickets by comparison and thanks to the strong pound we'd get double the amount of jumps for our money.... if not triple

So your plane ticket would be re-couped in jumping and experiances while here - I mean - DAMN - just the experiance would be worth it - seeing a bunch of drunk Americans falling out of golf carts and scraping their ass on the pavement . . . fun stuff I tell you.:D:D

haha, well hurry up and get your act together. If your going to designate yourself the hosts of the 'WORLD' event :P pull your finger out and bloody get on with it... then I'll be there :D

2 Suggestions . . .

Lost Prairie 2007 - 40th Anniversary - Should be EPIC . . . Not a "World" Event but damn near. There will be representation from several different countries and a very diverse eclectic variety of personalities to play with. Of course, the weather is terrible, the beer is hot, the skydiving sucks and there are too many Canadians - but you can't have it all.:)

Skyfest 07 - Great event - come help pass your knowledge on to younger skydivers - help build confidence - learn - give back to the sport and the most important - have fun doing it. Skyfest is all about the new jumper - there are scolarships given out and money raised for training and safety courses. Jump with world class skydivers -

There are alot of places to go if you need to get into some great - problem is - after you get here - how do we get you to leave?:o:P:P
