skysprite 0 #1 April 16, 2007 I've narrowed my titles down to two. I'm about 90% sold on one over the other, but I thought I'd let you all have a go, for some crazy reason. So what'd I write about? My thesis basically looks at anorexia in a historical context as it, and the advent of the internet, leads to the emergence of the Pro-Ana movement as the next logical step in the evolution of anorexia, on the part of the sufferer. I explain how the internet allowed for the introduction of the largely unacceptable notion of celebrating anorexia and bulimia, in the form of the Pro-Ana movement. Additionally, I argue that the internet may have particular significance for adolescents who feel marginalized, because it provides a low-risk venue for finding and communicating with others who share their perceived or real differences. Stemming from this, I look at the culture, and community building aspects of Pro-Ana from the beginnings of the movement dated around 2000, to current definitions, ideologies, and trends found in various websites, blogs, message boards, MySpace pages, and You Tube videos. (I don't make any claims as to the rightness or wrongness off Pro-Ana, rather I'm simply looking at the culture behind it.)~skysprite
pinkfairy 0 #2 April 16, 2007 I hope we get to see your thesis too! It sounds interesting. Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet. I'm a BIG, TOUGH BIGWAY FORMATION SKYDIVER! What are you?
SBS 0 #3 April 16, 2007 I've always been Pro-Anorexia/Bulimia...whatever it takes to look good, right? PS - I voted "Other"...I think you should combine the two... Starving Culture: A look at the Pro-Ana movement on the internet _____________ I'm not conceited...I'm just realistic about my awesomeness...
skysprite 0 #4 April 16, 2007 Sure! I'm making changes to the first draft at the moment and will turn in the second draft next week. I'll have one more chance to make changes based on those comments, then the final will be turned in on May 7th. Hopefully I'll be completely happy with it by the final. SBS - Yes, of course! Maintaining a girlish fallrate requires effort, right? ~skysprite
Nightingale 0 #5 April 16, 2007 I'd take "pro-ana" out of your title or define it there, because until they read your paper, people may not understand the term. Perhaps something like "Pro-Ana - The internet culture of anorexia and bulimia" or "Starving culture - Anorexia as a lifestyle choice".
