I always have to provide it for health insurance and the doctor's office for my kids. What about calling them?

Westlaw public records search (e.g., in case she purchased a car)? I can't recall whether that includes SSNs, though. . . . I just remembered that you can get a LOT of info. that way. Fortunately, I don't have to use it much. ;)

she was born 5 months ago.

Used to be you didn't need no steenkin' social security number until you actually started working. For a 5-month old, I would tell the IRS to stuff-it. If they don't like it, tell 'em to come and try and confiscate that first-born and see what happens. If they think you made up the exemption, send them a copy of the baby food bill (or birth certificate).

Call the doctor's office and find out if they have it. If they do, you will probably have to go in person to get it because doctors have been really weird about privacy since HIPAA. You can also try calling her health insurance provider. They probably have it, since most insurance companies want it to begin coverage.

You can't file the return without it, if you want the deduction, according to the IRS FAQ:
Quote

If you file your return claiming your daughter as a dependent and do not provide her social security number on the return, the dependency exemption will be disallowed. You have two options. You could file your income tax return without claiming your daughter as a dependent. After you receive her social security number, you could then amend your return on Form 1040X (PDF), Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. You have three years from the later of the due date of the return or from the date the return was filed to amend the return.

The other option is to file a Form 4868 (PDF), Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
