skydemon2 0 #2 April 18, 2007 Yes, do you need help with a patent? Maybe a self packing parachute? Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone! I like to start my day off with a little Ray of Soulshine™!!
jumpnjivin 0 #3 April 18, 2007 Why as a matter of fact yes! Let me send my design right over to you. I wish... No I'm going for my electical Engineering Degree and just had a few questions about becoming a patent agent. and If a law school dedicated to patent law would be better than a "regular" law school. Jewels 0 #4 April 18, 2007 I'm NOT a patent lawyer, but given that you have to pass the patent bar exam in addition to the regular, run-of-the-mill torture, I would give it some serious consideration if you know of a school that focuses on that. jumpnjivin 0 #5 April 18, 2007 Well my plan was after getting my BA in EE to take the patent bar,(which you can take after you have you BA in certain degree's EE being one of them) then hopefully get hired by a lawfirm that would sport the bill to become a patent attorney. Jewels 0 #6 April 18, 2007 Ummm, well, it's an interesting idea. As I said, I'm not a patent attorney and don't work in a law firm that does that kind of law, but I don't think that you should put too many eggs in that basket. There are plenty of lawyers to choose from without paying to put them through law school. What about trying for a fellowship to pay those bills instead?TPM Sister #
JSE 1 #7 April 18, 2007 I'm not a patent attorney yet- still have one year of law school to go. I'm also planning on taking the patent bar very soon. I would highly recommend getting a BS if you can, its just better (wish I had). Also, my friends in law school who have experience in their field have had a much easier time getting a job. Also experience as a patent agent is good to. Both is really the best. Don't know about getting a firm to foot the bill for law school. If they did you would probobly have to trade in your soul. But you can still work as an agent part time while in school which is what one of my friends did. I don't know about law schools that specialize in patent law. The best thing to do is go to the best lawschool you can get into. hope that helps.
jumpnjivin 0 #8 April 18, 2007 Well that's one reason I'm trying to find somebody in that field. I spoke with one guy that got his Civil Engineering degree, went to a patent specific law school then got hired right out of school. He told me that the one thing he would do different would be to pass the patent bar after his BA then get hired on as a patent agent. Was wondering if this might be realistic coming from other patent agent or attorneys. But i agree with you I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket. If need be I'll get my loans for law school and do it that way if need be. But the other way sounds so much better (get paid AND get school paid for

Damn I knew I shouldn't have sold my soul so soon. I thought all lawyers had to sign a deal with the devil anyways. Thanks for the advice. What law shool you at? brierebecca 0 #11 April 18, 2007 I'm not a patent lawyer, but if I had it to do all over again I would have taken steps to become one. Yes, it's hard to become one, but after you get done taking both bars you get to charge exorbitant amounts of money for relatively little work compared to the rest of us law slaves. And a degree in some sort of science or engineering is a prerequisite to taking the Patent bar. I really wish I hadn't majored in Classics. brierebecca 0 #12 April 18, 2007 Quotehopefully get hired by a lawfirm that would sport the bill to become a patent attorney I've never heard of this, and I'm guessing its because no firm is going to hire you and foot the bill for law school. Statistically, very few of us (I think it's like 20 percent) even get hired before we pass the bar exam after graduating. Law school is hard, and no firm is going to take the gamble that you'll finish it. Brie"Ive seen you hump air, hump the floor of the plane, and hump legs. BGill 0 #13 April 18, 2007 Quoteafter getting my BA in EE do you mean a BS (Bachelor of Science)? if it helps at all, i know a few people who work for the patent office. i also know some people who used to work there but now work in regulatory affairs here at the FDA. all are engineers (biomedical). FreeflyChile 0 #14 April 18, 2007 im currently, as i type this, studying for the patent bar. since i haven't gone into practice yet (i need to find a job, and i graduate in a month!!!!), i dont know what to tell you except that if you're going to do this, i hope you really really like the subject matter. i think IP in general is very love/hate. also, the review materials for the patent bar are EXPENSIVE!!!!
