Thanatos340 1 #7 April 20, 2007 From wordorigins.org: QuoteThis term is American in origin and dates to at least 1937. The exact reference is uncertain, but it is most likely to be evocative of the dust bowl and the extreme poverty and unclean conditions in which many had to live during the Depression. From a Time magazine review of the Boris Karloff movie Night Key in the 26 April 1937 issue: Nearly blind and dirt-poor, Inventor Dave Mallory (Karloff) devises a burglar alarm worked by electric eyes. The bit of internet lore about Life in the 1500s claims that dirt poor dates to Shakespearian England where finished floors were rare. This is utterly false. Chris -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What does filthy have to with "filthy rich"? Touche. So in essence, the filthy rich and the dirt poor are both dirty slobs and it's the middle class who practise good hygiene. Now that I think about it, Bill Gates looks like a slob and so did Howard Hughes. Chris _________________________________________ Chris

Gawain 0 #17 April 21, 2007 It comes from times where those that were poor had dirt floors in their homes. My great-grandfather was dirt poor before he emigrated to the US from Croatia in the beginning of the 20th century. He was, "dirt poor". So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
