What the hell does the phrase 'dirt poor' mean?

Recommended Posts

don't know exactly.... but I'd guess to say: you're so poor you can't even wash / or you're living in the dirt.... :S

could be completely wrong.

i always wondered what it meant when someone says

"more ___ then you can shake a stick at"...

is there actually someone shaking a stick at things and getting overwhelmed?

I know it has to do with being poor, but what does dirt have to do with it?:|

What does filthy have to with "filthy rich"?

when you have more money than you can spend, you're filthy rich. :P

From wordorigins.org:

Quote

This term is American in origin and dates to at least 1937. The exact reference is uncertain, but it is most likely to be evocative of the dust bowl and the extreme poverty and unclean conditions in which many had to live during the Depression.

From a Time magazine review of the Boris Karloff movie Night Key in the 26 April 1937 issue:

Nearly blind and dirt-poor, Inventor Dave Mallory (Karloff) devises a burglar alarm worked by electric eyes.

The bit of internet lore about Life in the 1500s claims that dirt poor dates to Shakespearian England where finished floors were rare. This is utterly false.

Touche. So in essence, the filthy rich and the dirt poor are both dirty slobs and it's the middle class who practise good hygiene.

Now that I think about it, Bill Gates looks like a slob and so did Howard Hughes.

It comes from times where those that were poor had dirt floors in their homes. My great-grandfather was dirt poor before he emigrated to the US from Croatia in the beginning of the 20th century. He was, "dirt poor".;)

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!
