floridadiver81 0 #1 April 21, 2007 So im at work..and i notice on the MWR calendar that there is a "skydiving trip" being planned by the military morale welfare and recreation committee. WTF?? All..well...most military sport jumpers are told not to do it...or at least advised against doing it due to the fact of the inherit risks of the sport. Why the hell would a MILITARY committee plan such an event if it is so frowned upon?!"Age has absolutely nothing to do with knowledge, learning, respect, attitude, or personality." -yardhippie "Fight the air, and the air will kick your ass!!! joblades 0 #2 April 22, 2007 In the 11 years I have in the Army, I have never been told not to jump. But at the same time I have never seen a skydiving trip organized by MWR. Which installation is doing it?~Freedom is never free
SkymonkeyONE 4 #3 April 22, 2007 I instructed at and was a member of a military skydiving club (MWR then NAF) for nearly 20 years.
floridadiver81 0 #4 April 22, 2007 NAS Jacksonville. Maybe it vaires by branch or command...but when i started i was advised to not do it. They obviously cant stop me..but if something were to happen...god forbid...my life insurance would be deemed invalid."Age has absolutely nothing to do with knowledge, learning, respect, attitude, or personality." -yardhippie "Fight the air, and the air will kick your ass!!! popsjumper 2 #6 April 22, 2007 At Orientation for AIT (Advanced Individual Training) back in the late 60s, they told us not to do dangerous activities of any sort. They told us the Army would court marshal us for damaging government property and that if we were killed, our survivor's benefits would be voided. True story. Yes, yes...it was BS but they had us believing it until we wised up.My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. floridadiver81 0 #7 April 22, 2007 Whats up man. So what you are saying is that my life insurance will be valid if something happens to me skydiving? I was told it wouldnt be due to the activity require unnessary risk?"Age has absolutely nothing to do with knowledge, learning, respect, attitude, or personality." -yardhippie "Fight the air, and the air will kick your ass!!! joblades 0 #8 April 22, 2007 You are right, your SGLI would not cover anything if you don't make it skydiving. Some people choose to have like insurance just for skydiving or other extreme sports, especially if you travel outside the US to jump.~Freedom is never free
popsjumper 2 #9 April 22, 2007 That's why I always tell everybody that if I get hurt/die skydiving, just take my gear and load me up in a truck and dump me off on the side of the road a few miles away. Seriously. Well, kinda....yeah, I'm pretty sure.My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. Icon134 0 #10 April 22, 2007 I have never been told that I can't participate in skydiving. I have been advised to consider my safety when participating in the activity but have never been told I can't do it.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... kbordson 8 #11 April 22, 2007 When I was in I was specificially told (and signed a safety briefing bullet note) not to Skydive, Paraglide, Scuba Dive, Rappel, Rock Climb, Race Vehicles (cars or motorcycles). There may have been other things on that... but that was almost 15 years ago. The memory fades.

Some people choose to have like insurance just for skydiving or other extreme sports, especially if you travel outside the US to jump. I believe SGLI will cover it if you're licensed and at a USPA dropzone. TSGLI will now cover non-combat injuries, etc. There is a framework, but I believe it is based on where you're assigned. Jumpers that reside at Fort Campbell must jump at a USPA DZs, that directive comes from the CG. I'm curious if there is a DA policy as well, I just don't remember. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! I think the range of activities open to members of the UK military is absolutely fantastic, and also one of the best recruiting tools there is. I'm amazed that portions of the US military seem to be taking the opposite approach.Do you want to have an ideagasm?

The Army encourages safety, but doesn't disallow motorcycling, skydiving, etc. MWR is a morale organization, but they're hit-or-miss.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
