snowslider 0 #1 September 26, 2006 o I'm new to the sport but I really have been looking for some gear of my own. I look at rigs on here all the time, I look at the gear for sale at my dropzone, and I even look on ebay. I saw an add on ebay for a complete rig for sale and I placed a bid at $650 knowing it would sale for much more but in the back of my head hoping I would win. Anyway, the auction ended and the final winning bid was $1350. Well I just got home and checked my email and I have a message from ebay saying that the winner bidder was unable to buy the rig so I was the second highest bidder and it is mine at $650 if I want it. PLEASE help and tell me if this gear is good or not. I will copy and paste the add as well as I can. Also, i think it said somthing about it being set up for CREW, what does that mean? can I open at terminal speed? if not what do i need to do to change it. Any and all advice would be much appricated. Thanks Sun Path Javelin J-4 Container DOM 3/95 Dream Catcher included! Reasons: 1: NO VELCRO! 2: All checks can be easily performed with no hidden reserve pins. 3: The risers are easily positioned during packing and remain out of harms way until opening NO VELCRO! 4: The bridal is protected. 5: The Reserve pilot-chute is protected from snags by a very secure riser flap the same applies to the main 6: The reserve pilot-chute is also basically unobstructed. I love this rig it has soft openings smooooth landings I had to decide and offload this one as I have 7 rigs and out of the weight range for this one. wmw999 2,587 #2 September 26, 2006 That depends partly on how big you are, and how big the harness is. Because these are all things that are fit. It's definitely older gear, but reasonable for starting belly flying. But if you weigh more than about 160 soaking wet, it's not the right gear. It'll be reasonably easy to pack because the canopies aren't oversized at least. You shouldn't freefly in that rig, either. It's OK for RW, but for freeflying you should get something with flaps whose bottoms tuck in or fold over. The price is not bad for gear that's probably jumpable. but it has to be right. The harness has to fit, also. And it should definitely pass muster by a rigger. If it were me, I'd probably tell the guy that it's interesting, but that I'd want more information, and that it would have to pass muster by a rigger. You'd want the harness size right up front. Kris 0 #3 September 26, 2006 Another thing to watch out for is getting an email saying "The first bidder backed out, it's yours if you want it." That's one of the oldest scams in the book. If they're serious, they can take the rig to a DZ and then you can call the DZ to verify the rig and the owner. Otherwise, run away.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

I agree with the above, in addition: Advise the seller you will only participate in the purchase via the use of an Escrow Service It will protect both the buyer and the seller. It works very well and the fee is nominal. If the sellar backs out and refuses (no expense to him/her, report it to E-bay, looks like a scam, smells like a scam, it's a scam!!! kelpdiver 2 #6 September 26, 2006 QuoteAnother thing to watch out for is getting an email saying "The first bidder backed out, it's yours if you want it." That's one of the oldest scams in the book. looking at the gear, may be that that high offer was a shill that didn't work out. Who would pay 1350 for that setup? So it may be a true seller, but with ethical issues on the auction process. Definitely use a go between to inspect and manage the transaction.
snowslider 0 #7 September 26, 2006 thanks for the help everyone, I did some more investigating, and yes it was a scam, I went to the seller and asked him if he in fact sold it, and he had. this is the third scam i have encountered trying to buy a rig, 2 of them where from dz.com. I'm pretty sure I won't get to burned now since I've had this experience, I will only do buisness threw my home dz and riggers. For the record though, I am 6' 165lbs. I don't want a first main larger than a 210, i've been jumping a 220 alot and really like it, but if anyone knows any good gear that would fit let me know. Thanks, sorry for the trouble. I will delete this post when I can figure out how.
dragon2 2 #8 September 26, 2006 Did you report dz.com scams to the moderator? Did you check the scam forum before responding? I've never gotten scammed on dz.com, besides the ubiquitous Nigerian scams but those are real easy to spot. ciel bleu, Saskia
snowslider 0 #9 September 27, 2006 I haven't reported it yet because I can't find the add on here anymore, I was telling a rigger at my dz about it and he instantly knew and told me the scam, some guy selling a nice mirage g4 with nitron 170 main, for around 1600, he says he is in europe and will send the rig from there, it turns out that the reserve pack job has my riggers name on it and the rig belongs to his friend that jumps here in Utah. I'm not saying anything bad about the dz.com classifieds but I am just discourged about buy gear online since the first few attempts I made turned out to be shitty scammers. skybytch 273 #10 September 27, 2006 QuoteI will only do buisness threw my home dz and riggers. That's not a bad idea at all. But I'd also suggest checking with some of the major gear dealers out there (Square One, SkyCat, Sunshine Factory, etc). They usually have some used equipment in stock and they want to stay in business in this very small world so they aren't likely to jack you around.
