airtwardo 7 #1 April 29, 2007 Here SHE is, the USS New York It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center. It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft. Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there." Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back." The ship's motto? skydiver30960 0 #2 April 29, 2007 And it seems to get the Snopes Seal of Approval, with the exception that the pic is actually of the USS San Antonio, a vessel of the same class. Elvisio "good stuff" Rodriguez
airtwardo 7 #3 April 29, 2007 I was wondering about that...A buddy in the Navy sent me the pic and article. But mentioned that the 'number' on the bow didn't seem to correspond...he thought maybe it had been 're-issued' or something... ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

nanook 1 #6 April 30, 2007 Quote-Other than minor tweeks, ships of the same class: Samey-same? Exactly. Sometimes there are slight changes to the class as technology gets better and they are sub-grouped. Example: an Arleigh Burke class Destroyer Flight 1 has no helo hangar, Flight II has a helo hanger, Flight III has no visible stacks._____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln
