sundevil777 102 #2 April 29, 2007 How could it have collapsed? The fire couldn't have been hot enough to melt steel or concrete! People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
Rookie120 0 #3 April 29, 2007 Oh hell! Thats not good. When I used to drive truck and made it out the Cali I remember that area sucking at all hours of the day. I could not imagine what it will look like now.If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
dropdeded 0 #4 April 29, 2007 I grew up in the Bay Area and saw that on the news this morning. Anyone able to explain exactly which interchange and at what point it collapsed?? DEFINATELY gonna suck to commute in the area for quite awhile, it was already a nightmare.------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -

Rookie120 0 #7 April 29, 2007 I just seen the news film on tv and it looks bad! It is a miracle the driver is still alive. He is burned but still alive. Good luck with your travel in the morning for whoever live out there. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
johnsw71 0 #8 April 30, 2007 Just drove back to the city from Skydance in Davis (Eastbound I-80). So THAT's what the back-up was all about. Surprisingly, though, it was only backed up for about two miles and it only took about 20 minutes to get through the mess. I was in line on the Bay Bridge for a whopping 3 minutes. Andrewwhyte 1 #9 April 30, 2007 Quote How could it have collapsed? The fire couldn't have been hot enough to melt steel or concrete! Did you see the video of the thing collapsing? There was a series of small explosions right at the base just as it was collapsing (like there were explosives planted there.)

dorbie 0 #11 April 30, 2007 I've attached an image of the damage and a Google Earth placemark that orients 'up' to the direction of that view so you can see exactly where this is and the extent of the damage. P.S. use "Save As" if Google Earth can't open it from temporary internet files.

I think I will avoid the area... That interchange is normally huge suckage to drive thru... but now it will totally blow till they fix this one.... eeeeessssshhhh Not the first time this kind of accident has happened. The same thing happened in Birmingham, Alabama at Malfunction Junction, the interchange between I-65 and I-20/59. Some asstwat cut in front of a tanker truck causing the driver to slam his brakes and jackknife the rig, and it slammed into the bridge support. BOOOOOOM!!! The driver was killed and the asstwat hightailed it outta there. The caught the sumbitch later anyway. But yeah, the hot fire melted the structural steel and collapsed the highway bridge at Alabama's busiest highway interchange. The nice thing was, it only took 5 weeks to replace the bridge with a new one with constant 24/7 work around the clock and a big fat bonus for each day before the deadline it was completed. But yeah, traffic was a nightmare during that time. I ended up having to choose an alternate route to get to and from work."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban

DUDE.. the whole population of Alabama is less than what goes across those bridges in a day
monkycndo 0 #14 April 30, 2007 Here's what is closed. The connector ramp from the Bay Bridge to 580 east. From the Bay Bridge, this also affects the connector to I24 to the Caldecott. The only way to get to 580 and 24 east is taking surface streets as soon as you get off the Bay Bay Bridge. The connector ramp from Emeryville I80 west to I880 south is closed. You can get around it from I80 west using I580 east to I980 to I880. Other than rubberneckers slowing down traffic, the approaches to the Bay Bridge are not damaged. Govenor Ahnuld has made all public transportation free in the bay area today to help reduce the pressure on the damaged roads.50 donations so far. Give it a try. lauras 0 #16 April 30, 2007 Holy crap...what a pain in the ass! Still, it's not as bad as the '89 earthquake shutting down the bridge & the various highway & BART collapses. My brother was at Berkeley then & my parents lived in San Francisco. Getting home for the weekend (read: feed me & do my laundry Mom) became quite a trek driving around the entire bay and coming up through San Jose. Nightmare... monkycndo 0 #17 April 30, 2007 BART didn't have any issues from the '89 quake. Once the tracks were checked and confirmed OK, they were back in service. The biggest concern was the expansion joint where the transbay tube meets the SF side. It was fine. BART normally shuts down between 1AM and 4AM for routine maintenance. Due to the Bay Bridge collapse, they ran service 24 hours a day until the bridge was repaired. Without it, the traffic nightmare would have been much worse.50 donations so far. Give it a try.
