Then in the late 90's my mind and ears became open to electronic music. Then all I heard from people was "Dude, all that music sounds the same "pfft, psst, pfft, psst, pfft, psst, pfft, psst.."" My answer to them has always been that they are not listening to the music, but only hearing it. You have to keep in mind that the people who are completely closed minded about different types of music are the same people who watch and vote for American Idol, listen to country music, and are perfectly happy listening to nothing but the radio.
