everymansaved 0 #1 April 29, 2007 Hey all, to make a long, really weird story short, I'm about to get a ride in a friend of mine's father's airplane. I haven't seen it since i was a kid, but she told me it's called a "Grauman American." I don't believe she's very aeronauticly inclined, so she might be slightly incorrect about the name, but has anyone heard of it, or something like it? I want to know if I can make a skydive from it! I did a quick google search and found nothing. Thanks everyone!God made firefighters so paramedics would have heroes...and someone can put out the trailer fires. sundevil777 102 #3 April 29, 2007 If you spell Grumman correctly, you'll find out more about it. It looks to be completely unsuitable for jumping. Even if the design wasn't bad for jumping, the plane needs to be approved for it by the FAA. So, even if the pilot would let you do it over an approved DZ (he shouldn't), you shouldn't do it because you would be risking his license and it is dangerous to try to extricate yourself out of such unsuitable airplanes. It is so tempting to want to convince every plane owner out there to let you fall out of it, but it is simply no good for a lot of reasons.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
airtwardo 7 #4 April 29, 2007 Yeah...what sundevil777 said! It's a sliding canopy that's not meant to be opened that far in-flight. If ya get THAT figured out, it's a really small aircraft so you getting out creates a lot of drag, which means more speed to keep it flying, which means even MORE problems with the canopy...and more trouble getting out. AND it's a short aircraft, which means the TAIL is pretty damn close when ya get off at the speed ya need to be flying..Like I said, BTDT, got the tee shirt....don't ever need to try it again! With a "B" license, might wanna pass on this one, and just go for the ride. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
everymansaved 0 #5 April 29, 2007 Thanks guys, I guess my spelling was a bit off, but to be fair, i Coppied it from her email to me! Too bad about the plane though, it would have been neat to get a jump from something totally unique like that.God made firefighters so paramedics would have heroes...and someone can put out the trailer fires. airtwardo 7 #10 April 30, 2007 Quote That's better than having to tow it while doggy paddling Yeah, we were sweating it a bit! The funniest line of the year, went to the ramper that came tooling out on the tow mule when he saw me pushing the Tiger to the side of the taxi way.... As he hopped off the mule, he dead pans me with...."Yeah that's the trouble with these 'little' airplanes, EVERYDAY DAY ...ya gotta take 'em out for a walk." ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

itllclear 1 #12 April 30, 2007 Yep- it's not legal to open the canopy that far in flight. It's also not legal to drive 66 mph on the freeway. Now IF someone was to want to jump out of a Grumman Tiger, it POSSIBLY could be done with reasonable safety IF you startred out with enough altitude that you could accept the altitude loss during climb out and IF the jumper firmly planted his feet against the fuselage and IF the jumper dived for the wingtip rather than down or back, allowing the jumper to pass way outside of the horizontal stabilizer. I heard a RUMOR that someone actually did this in the early 80's over Fran's Star Ranch at Beatty, NV, but of course there's NO WAY I could confirm (or deny) this story. But then again, we may not have had full fuel with two, 240 pound pollacks in the cockpit! The REAL problem is the pollack in the left seat didn't check to see if fuel was available on Catalina, and the right seater (me) figured he'd done it before. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

ExAFO 0 #16 April 30, 2007 I've flown in one, fun aircraft. It's not a jump plane, unless you're abandoning it in an IFE. It's not worth the risk to the plane and yourself to try to jump it, risking a midair... Just enjoy the flight.Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.
