Why Do We…

Recommended Posts

…call the year 1907
“nineteen oh seven” and not “one thousand nine hundred seven”?

But the year 2007 is
“two thousand seven” and not “twenty oh seven”?

It’s pretty universal. The only time I’ve heard of 2007 as “twenty oh seven” is when I’m calling the automated tax line at the Commonwealth of Virginia. Their recording pronounces the year differently than the rest of us, and I wonder why we don’t pronounce it that way since we did in the 1900s.

Does anyone have an explanation?

you think that one catches them...try giving your phone number or social security number in a different manner....such as
social security number : 1234-56-789
most people can't get the number right when you do that to them...:D

Is that your expert opinion from having lived through both years?

Easy. It's the syllables.

"Nineteen" is only 2 syllables compared to 6 in "one thousand nine hundred"

"Two thousand" and "twenty oh" have the same number of syllables. two thousand makes more sense in this case.

However, when talking about the year 2010 people say "twenty ten" instead of "two thousand ten". It's less syllables.

Same goes for the year 1018. "Ten eighteen" is shorter than "one thousand eighteen".

Although if you ask me how to refer to 1007 I would be inclined to say "one thousand seven" instead of "ten seven" or "ten oh seven".

Oh, well, so much for that theory. :D:D:S:P

What is something that you have always wondered about?

:$ The other day on the news they were talking about Prince Harry going to Iraq. I don't know why, but I thought to myself, "Prince Harry. Prince Charles. Prince William...What the hell is their last name? 'of Wales?'":D

I seriously didn't know. I asked Billy, "Hey, what the hell is Prince Harry's last name?" He didn't know. I e-mailed my friend who loves that show called "Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader?" and thinks she's the shiz and she didn't know...

So last resort is always to look it up.B|

And the answer is: They don't have one. But when one is used it's "Mountbatten-Windsor". Somehow, I'd have been more satisfied if it were "Smith" or something.[:/]

OH YES!!!

Excpecially where the bottle was hidden . . .

Why did you tell her that I would only get the bottle if I drug it out from where she hid it, using my teeth?:|
