600 HP grin

Recommended Posts

Pat Swovelin and I flew out to El Mirage Dry Lake Bed this morning to watch some Bonneville type speed runs. There must have been 100 cars and motorcycles there in all kinds of unbelieveable shapes and sizes. There was a 50cc two ccyle motorcycle in a caccoon that ran 114 MPH!!!

Ever seen the grin guys get when they see 600 horsepower vehicles accelerate to 300 MPH?! Mine is still stuck on my mush.

What we need here are some pictures.

Exactly where did you fly into, what did you fly there, and what's the location of the lake bed?

And last, you know posting "anything" in this here particular forum requires some very specific words in order to receive a reply. ie. boobies, beer, tits, does your dog crap on the lawn, feelings, I'm coming out, or some fucking poll on some stupid shit.....;):D:D:D:D

Pix coming.

The lake bed is just south of Edwards AFB where they land the space shuttle. This lake bed is far smaller but no less flat and hard. I've landed several types of a/c there. I fly a Cessna 180 now. It's a jungle rules kinda place. Head on a swivel and watch out for each other. There are often UAVs like the Predator flying in the area. Ultralights fly there all the time. It's about 3500' msl.

The races were over a 1.7 mile, almost straight course with radar traps at the end and miles to decelerate. They'd send the racers off with a push from their support trucks if needed and off they'd accelerate until all you could see was a cloud of powder-fine dust. Unbelieveable variety of shapes, sizes, powerplants and people. From the awesome to the sublime. What a day.

That's pretty cool. I've always wanted to go out on the flats and see them set land speed records (or just take one of my bikes for a few high speed runs)

Can't say I have anything to compete with though - 183 mph is as fast as she'll go - but it's still fun to top out your toys in a legal setting.
