wmw999 2,570 #1 May 8, 2007 I'm on travel in Florida today, and I drove past a really horrible accident that clearly had happened less than 5 minutes earlier (i.e. almost no backup yet). 2 cars, several hundred feet apart, motor out, crushed beyond recognition. But there were people stopped and helping folks from the third car, checking the other cars, helping with traffic. Someone had parked their car to block the view of the one car that was directly across the freeway (to stop gawkers until the last minute I assume). Everyone was calm, and just trying to keep things reasonably orderly until the police and ambulances got there. I'm sure no one knew each other, but each one found a place to fill. Yeah, when people have a cause they can believe in, they'll pull together with just about anyone. I wish we had more positive causes. And some vibes for the folks who were in the wreck, both living and not, and for the folks who went and checked to make sure, and helped injured, and everything else. Not a pretty sight. normiss 883 #3 May 8, 2007 I hope this wasn't the wreck out on 520 east of Orlando where the mustang was completely split in half! My god is that a horrible wreck and it appears a number of people died in it also. I soooo dig good samaritans! Thanks from the rest of us!
wmw999 2,570 #4 May 8, 2007 Yep, sure was I just drove past; there were plenty of others stopped, and I'd've added nothing. Wendy W. I like to believe that deep down, people are basically good and caring. Thanks for sharing this.~~April Camelot II, the Electric Boogaloo!

NWFlyer 2 #7 May 9, 2007 Not nearly on the same scale, but I had a "restoring my faith in the youth of the world" moment on the bus today. At the last stop before I exited, an older couple got on and both of them clearly had trouble moving. The bus was fairly full at this point, particularly up near the front. I found myself glancing at the seats wondering if someone would move for them and I smiled when I saw a group of three teenage girls get up and move towards the back. Nice to see kids that age not totally self-involved. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. ifall 0 #8 May 9, 2007 I don't think, no, I know, you never hear about the good things people try to do for others (for the most part) they don't even know. They don't do it for the acknowledgement, they do it because the have a heart. You only hear about the bad shit people do. I had a friend who was involved in helping someone when they face planted into some ice while skiing. I mean he was right behind the guy. He didn't think twice about helping the person but someone else, after seeing all the blood on him from the accident victim, bitched him out to hell and back about putting himself in danger because of the exposure he had to the blood. I mean I guess he was right but would you think twice in a situation like that?

Maybe it was a defense mechanism because s/he didn't have to deal with being right behind the one that hit the ice. I'm sure s/he would have helped also, but had the leisure of not having to. WE all gotta go sometime and I think I'd rather have a questionable blood transaction than go headlong into a face of ice. OUCH!!!~~April Camelot II, the Electric Boogaloo! pinkfairy 0 #10 May 9, 2007 There's laws against just passing and not helping if help is needed in cases such as this. At least there is in my country. And it's also important not to stop if your help is not needed. But of course it's good to see people handle this in a good way.Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet. I'm a BIG, TOUGH BIGWAY FORMATION SKYDIVER! What are you? For a while people were getting sued for things like breaking a rib when comproessing someones chest and saving heir life.(at least there were rumors of this) but they passed the good samaritan law. basically if you are able and trained you can do what you can to save a life, loss of limb or injury. but if you've never even passed CPR brochure than you should help tot he extent of your knowlegde and let someone else do the technical stuff. My photos My Videos

Scoop 0 #14 May 9, 2007 I remember a TV program a while ago where they set up a hidden camera and ran various scenarios. One was an old man lying on the floor in an alleyway, I think another was someone in a car slumped over the wheel and they were trying to see how many people walked past and how many would offer help or investigate. I think it was hours before anyone took 5 minutes out their day to check on someone else. For all they know they could have been dead I drove by (off duty on holiday) a cyclist laying at the side of the road with his bike in the bushes. I stopped to check it out, I honestly thought he was dead as there was no movement and was silent. Talked to him... no response. pinched his ear lobe.... woke up. Polish guy drunk had fallen off his bike and just fallen asleep where he laid. What pissed me off is he'd obviouslly been there for ages and people either hadnt seen him because their observation skills are shit or they didnt want to get involved. Yet as soon as I parked up to protect the scene these cars started stopping as they assumed I'd knocked him off and they were wanting to call the police Luckily one was an off duty policeman for that area and I showed him my badge, explained what I had done and we sent the bloke off on foot as he was too pissed to ride. Most of the public are idiots Obviouslly I've gone to numerous incidents on duty and hardly ever are people trying to help. We had a serious car accident other day and all people did was crowd round to watch I reckon its british thing, People are embarrased to help and have everyone looking at them. EDIT TO ADD: Its nice when you hear of positive things like this

normiss 883 #16 May 9, 2007 That entire incident is just sad....looks like the mustang made a 270 in a crowded area.... http://www.wftv.com/news/13283384/detail.html http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orange/orl-beachline0907may09,0,5340866.story?coll=orl-home-headlines
wmw999 2,570 #17 May 9, 2007 I saw a car do something like that into the other lanes almost exactly at the same place a few years ago on another trip. That time the car wasn't going very fast, neither was anyone else, as it was raining. He hit an oily patch just as he was swerving for some reason. He did a complete 360 through the median, losing speed the whole time, and ended up facing towards us in the oppsing lanes. Because of the overall speeds and small amount of traffic, there was nothing but some soiled pants. I blew off my drive into Orlando and went straight back to the hotel that time. My son was with me at the time, the drive to Orlando was for his benefit, and turning around all of a sudden made perfect sense. I think that some sort of barrier, at least a curb and noticeable ditch, is a real enhancement to highway safety. normiss 883 #18 May 9, 2007 That road specifically has been a problem for MANY years. I keep wondering how many people will have to die until it's fixed.
