karenmeal 0 #1 May 10, 2007 How in the hell do I make a pivot table? "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
Richards 0 #2 May 10, 2007 Howdy, Basically what they do is assign a preset value to a certain series of outcomes. Like if you are assigning grades to students you can build a pivot table that assigns A- for any grade between 80 and 84, A for anything between 85 and 89, and A+ for 90 to 100. Hard for me to describe but here are a few links. http://www.microsoft.com/dynamics/using/excel_pivot_tables_collins.mspx http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/ME/mes9p4.html http://www.ozgrid.com/Excel/excel-pivot-tables.htm http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HA010346321033.aspx http://www.exceltip.com/exceltips.php?view=category&ID=32 Alternately if you live near a school (or are a student) anybody from the university's ITM department should be able to get you started on it right away. karenmeal 0 #3 May 10, 2007 Thanks.. maybe a pivot table wasn't what I needed. Anyways.. I did all the calculations by hand and sorted it out. Man that took a while! mnealtx 0 #4 May 10, 2007 nested "if" functions can do the same thing as described. I have a spreadsheet that calculates tax from a yearly salary using nested if functions.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706

karenmeal 0 #6 May 10, 2007 Well.. i dunno anything about quicken.. But what I was trying to do was make a sheet that tallied errors codes and organized according to training status and study phase.. 7 months ago I didn't even know excel was more than just a plain ol' grid. Seriously. I feel sooo stuuupiid using that program. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
stitch 0 #7 May 10, 2007 Quicken is more of a business program. I really have no use for Excel."No cookies for you"- GFD "I don't think I like the sound of that" ~ MB65 Don't be a "Racer Hater"

Organizing by training phase sounds like a perfect use....if you have columns like this...Name, Training Status, Study Phase you can have the rows sorted by say study phase first, then Name or Study Phase, then Training Status, etc, etc. If you use advanced filters you can do much more than that. Tallying error codes...use countif perhaps? I work in Excel every day and do some things that I think are pretty cool but I am just scratching the surface.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
karenmeal 0 #9 May 10, 2007 I used the data sort feature... but I had 960 trials that I had to go through.. so using the data sort just scratched the surface of what I wanted to get excel to do. Once I got it into chunks it was easier to make a tally.. but it still took about 4 hours.I don't think I'm cut out for this end of research!
