Any Doctors Out There

Recommended Posts

I have a severe case of Tonsilittis (thats what the doc told me anyways)
Well they gave me Levaquin and told me i shold feel much better by the next day.
well it's been 2 now and I hurt worse than ever....
I cant sleep, eat, and now I cant even drink anything.
How long should I wait to let the meds work before going back in there.
He also gave me pain pills and said they would work really good, but they only take my headache away for about 3 hours and nothing for the pain when i swallow [:/][:/]

well I learned this the hard way.
When medicine is not working and it should you should immediately go back to the doctor.

They could have misdiagnosed you, or can give you something else, stronger maybe.

p.s. I'm not a doctor, I just play one on dz.com :D

I would lean towards returning today... that or at least calling the doc up and letting them know that the drugs don't seem to be working for you...

but that's just my 0.02 dollars

First.. You must sanitize your throat with Alcohol.. Lots of it. Patron is very good for this.

If that doesn’t work, Go to the medicine cabinet and take 2 of each.. whatever you find.

If that doesn’t work.. You need a Tracheotomy. Find an Old Ink pen.. Wipe it off real good on your jeans and then shove it through your Throat.

Then Apply more alcohol to sanitize.

Or you might just try calling a Real Doctor.:P:D

True. I'm not gonna die tonight and I know we have several real doctors that post on this forum. I just thought i'd try to get a little free advice before i spend another 200 bucks for a 5 minute office visit and he tells me to go home.

Call the Dr....

Beginning of March I went 3 days running a high grade fever - finally made it into urgent care, my BP was 80 / 40 and my red blood cell count was so low they insisted I go to the ER immediately.

Had I went to the Dr. or contacted the Dr. earlier I would not have faced what I did (trust me it wasn't fun).

It's just a phone call.... your life is much more important than that.

edited to add: you're worried about a $200.00 office visit.... try a $5000.00 ER visit (I haven't even received the Dr. bill yet).

I'm not a dr. just a paramedic/ combat medic but I've worked in the ER and urgent care clinics. first off keep taking your leviaqin, drink lots of fluids, and an anti-inflamitroy will help your throat. Motrin 800mg will work depending on what other meds you have. If eating is hard for you try getting a lidocaine mouthwash to gargle with before you eat, it's sold under hurricane spray or vicks cloraseptic. If you have a fever over 103 call your doctor. What other meds did they give you and in what dose? Adding anti inflamitorys can be dangerous unless I know what else your taking

I keep trying to drink water and gatoraid but it keeps getting tougher and tougher.... right now id just rather not swallow at all. I have to concentrate so hard just to get it down.
I jusy hope when i wake up in the morning it will fell better or else i'll go back to that doc.

Thanks :)

youre good to take 800mg of motrin/ Ibuprophin every 8 hours it's a good anti inflamitory and an okay pain killer. If you can stop by a wallgreens and get a clorosepitc spray, if you see a doctor ask for a lidocaine mouthwash you might be able to get it at your local pharmacey too

Yeah...
I've been taking my hydorcodone 1 every 4 hours (sometimes a little sooner at night) and i have chloreseptic and it helps with the pain for a bit, but now what ever i try to swallow tries to come out my nose because my throught is so swollen.....:S
I'll do like the nurse said and just wait for tomorrow and see if it feels better or i'll be making the first appt for the day.... I kinda thought it was weird when he looke in my mouth for (for real 1 second) walked out and grabbed some trial meds (that was cool cuz thats a 100 + dollar script) but i told i have had this before and it was an absess behind my tonsil.... he never looked.
I dont know
I'm not a docotor just a whiny sick dude HAHAHAHAHA:P

levaquin takes about 3-5 days to actually work, which is why you should have gotten 5 days worth. I'm guessing 500mg on day one then 250mg for the next 4 days is your therapy? Might be a little higher depending on age, weight, etc.....

Anyway, wait it out and if the pain doesnt start to fade by day 4, call your dr. Then you will probably be switched to pen unless your allergic to it.

Not a Dr. pharmacist though ;)

lots of water, sleep, and finish the therapy though.

Call the doctor today.

And just to repeat it...

Keep taking the levaquin.
Take the ibuprofen and hydrocodone on a regular basis for the first few days for the discomforts.
Liquids, whatever works (hot tea, cool water, popsicles, chicken noodle soup)

If you have trouble breathing - go to the ER.

Here's more info on Tonsilitis

I hope you start feeling better soon. [:/]

If you read the link that I had in my post.... this might last up to 2wks [:/]. Even with proper treatment. Sometimes it just takes time for the body to fight those nasty bugs.

Hopefully you have someone to spoil you and at least make you feel better psychologically if not physically (and remember, endorphins are very helpful...;).. so if you have the stregth and desire.... just don't kiss her and give her the same bug!!! :o)

Throat cultures may be positive for a couple weeks, but you should feel better within 72 hours. If not, you need to follow-up with your physician. Depending on whether a culture was done at the time of diagnosis, there could be other causes that need to be identified. Mono, for instance, can leave ya' with a bad spleen.

Also, if they did cultures, they should have sensitivities back. Levaquin may not be the best choice of abx. In my first 6 months of residency, I admitted a patient from the ER who later died from peritonsillar abscess...wouldn't want to miss that.

Still standing by the statement that it might be a while before you're up and running. Not trying to get in a pissing contest with Lindsey (Note: I'm not trying to say that she doesn't know what she's talking about and fully acknowledging the fact that I'm an OB/Gyn...) but I would go by what the ENT sources would say... siince tonsilitis is their field.

But still - keep in close contact with your doctor. Let them know how you are feeling and whether they think you should come in or not. Different areas have different "bugs" going around and the "flu"s that we get here might be different from what is in your area. Your Dr would know though...

Doesn't mean you have to go in every day and pay $200 each time you pass go... just make sure you communicate with them about how you're doing.

lol....no pissing contestant here either. It's just that even though a person *may* have symptoms for longer, if you're not better in 72 hours, most of us want to see you again. That's because usually symptoms do get better in that time period, and if they don't most of us want to make sure there's not something worse going on...like peritonsilar abscess, for instance. What starts out as a run-of-the mill problem can turn into something much worse. If it doesn't resolve in a typical time frame, then it's smart to be re-checked. That's all.
