If you're gonna talk trash, BACK IT UP

Recommended Posts

I'm sure everyone has heard the story about Mayweather, he was trashing fighters in the UFC in a recent press conference saying that the only reason they are in the UFC is because they couldn't make it in boxing. He said that any boxer would crush any MMA fighter in the octagon. UFC President Dana White and the Lightweight champ Sean Sherk decided to call him out. they both showed up at his fight the other day and when Mayweather was approached he was quick to say he was just joking and didn't mean it. White didn't believe the apology and is in the process of drawing up an offer for Mayweather to take on Sherk in the octagon.

My guess, Mayweather will continue to run his suck spewing all kinds of worthless threats out of his little cock holster and refuse to back any of it up. Sherk on the other hand is pushing the fight and ready to take Mayweather on at a moments notice.

Mayweather also made comments about how UFC fighters are uneducated and lack professionalism, hmm, uneducated huh(Liddell has a buisness degree), and no professionalism(Cotoure was on the Olympic team), this coming from a guy who to the best of my knowledge has no college education, and didn't he recently have some issues with the law?

Boxers may be great fighters in their controlled environment where your only threats are your opponents left and right hands, but when they step into the octagon they have nothing. The first couple UFC's proved this over 10 years ago, boxers aren't equipped to fight unless they are in a ring where they can't be kicked, taken down, and submitted.

I hope the media puts enough pressure on him to take this fight that he does it to try and save his rep. Boxing is a thing of the past and Sherk is going to prove it.

It's called marketing.

Ali was a pro at it.

I prefer the term cowardice. Mayweather should either make a public apology in front of the press or step into the octagon where he would last one round.

Comparing the Mixed Martial Arts such as UFC with a sport like boxing is like comparing apples with oranges. (*The moral of the rest of this post is that an Orange will kick an Apples ass everytime but I still prefer apple pie to orange juice - so no read to read any further) Sure they are both a contact sports but the UFC guys will win everytime. I am a boxing fan but do respect the UFC stuff when I watch it. You never hear people compare a UFC fight with Olympic Judo or Kickboxing. The sports are just different - UFC will win every time because they have more resources at their disposal. (kicks, leg sweeps, grappling AND punches that are not even within the rules of boxing, Judo or kickboxing). UFC mixes those three disciplines (and then some) together and says Go Get em'

Mayweather is a prettyboy loudmouth. If you look back at his career some of the soap operas he has been involved in have been less than professional. However, I like to watch the guy box because like it or not he is one of the best the sport has seen.

The fact is that top boxers are in absolute top shape and I could not survive 3 minutes in the ring throwing punches without throwing up. Boxing is a sport.. its an art and its awsome to watch when its a good fight. UFC I guess is probably the same way I just don't know all the players and its never grabbed my attention.

The rules of the two sports are different - its tough to compare them. It drives me nuts when the UFC types and the boxers try and do it. If anyone should know better its them. Then again someone above (I can't go back an see now) mentioned that its marketing. Hes right on the money. Mayweather runs his mouth and I sit here and type his name over and over...

Boxing is a dying sport. Boxing gyms are less common. Unfortunate because bodyweight exercises, minimal equipment and a coach is all you need to train. Boxing would be well served to promote BOXING and worry less about comparing themselves to UFC.

I doubt that I'm off-base. I'm not saying he doesn't know how to fight, but only a young man would get all worked up about the one form of entertainment versus the other. Is he right that a boxer would likely lose in a UFC styled fight? Sure. Is the other guy right that the average UFC guy would lose a boxing match to a professional boxer? Probably. Take away all the UFC guy's tools except his fists, and he's not going to be as good as someone who's accustomed to those limitations. Is WarpedSkydiver right that streetfights usually go to the ground? Absolutely, and that's part of why I was glad to have a ton of wrestling experience back in my 20's when I enjoyed fighting. Does ANY of this matter? Nope, not even a little bit. But the average young to mid 20's male will think it's pretty important shit. :D

Edit to add: Did you read this? :D

Ya got me, 25;)

I do train as a fighter, love to do it, have been doing it most of my life. and as anyone who has met em can tell you I'm really friendly and laid back but when you get me going on something I'm passionate about I get fired up. but one thing that pisses me off like none other is cowardice, I despise cowards. and you can call it "marketing" all you want, but Mayweather is nothing other than a worthless coward. He talks shit and would never have the balls to step out of his little controlled world of boxing, where if you fall down you get a chance to stand back up on your own and you don't have to worry about getting kicked or choked. Not knocking boxers, I couldn't hang in a boxing match, just knocking people that run there mouth and don't follow through.

Like the grunt said though, I get the privilige of playing for keeps every once in a while, what better training is there. I'll post some pics of it here shortly, there's some good stuff.

take care everyone

PS

hey Namgrunt I was wondering bout you today, good to hear from ya, tell your lovely wife I said hello

No wonder there's not enough love in this world. All you violence mongers just love to see other people beat each other to a pulp. Brutality is not the answer. What has this world come to? :|

I guess when he sees the MMA fighters in a standup with no kicks or elbows thrown he perceives that he could out box any of them.

Unfortunately, boxing has a much bigger following than MMA will ever have. I guess people consider boxing a gentleman's sport and regard MMA as barbaric. Just look at the purse for boxing. Lousy fighters easily get 1 million. A great MMA fighter will be lucky if he can break six figures. I mean it's still young and very much growing. As for it being a thing in the past, I think it's a good foundation to have. Look at Pedro Rizzo, he was a professional boxer. When he went to stand up with other MMA fighters, they got knocked the f*$! out!

I seriously doubt that he would risk injury and ruin his boxing career. It would be a dumb move on his part. I don't know if Sherk would be the right guy to represent MMA vs Mayweather. BJ Penn or Matt Sera is probably more like it. Those guys are heavy handed and Penn has a solid chin.

Try boxing your way out of a fight on the street.

Then make sure you have an ambulance waiting for you.

It will always wind up on the ground

I wouldn't say that. I've seen boxers that knocked people out with one clean solid punch that no one saw coming in several street fights. All it takes is one good solid punch to end a dispute.

Of course a boxer would lose to a decent UFC fighter. He has been trained to use his fists, not his feet. Take a UFC fighter, put him against a pro boxer in a ring and go by the rules of boxing and the UFC dude will be lucky to last 3 rounds.
Not fair to compare two athletes of different sports.

I seriously doubt Mayweather is a coward. Mouthy without a doubt but not a coward.

Boxing is an art form that, for some reason, has not attracted new fans as time went on. I remeber watching the heavyweight contenders of the late 60s and into the late 70s....Ali, Foreman, Frazer, etc. Those guys weren't just fighters, they were like gods to a whole generation.

On secong thought, I'd place even money on a match between Ali in his prime and any UFC fighter, even under UFC rules. Ali's reflexes were unreal, his power second to none. But most importantly he never lost his cool in the ring.

That is a stretch. To suggest that boxers do not have anything to offer is ludicrous. Yes boxers are limitted via the fact that there is no kicking and they do not go to the ground, but they are not helples lambs. If you look at the way many MMA fighters lunge at each other they are wide open for a clean shot. I hear everyone talk about boxers who lost at MMA but how good were these boxers?. If they were any good at boxing they would be making money at boxing rather than trying UFC. It is not a representative sample. I will not get into the boxing vs martial arts thing as there are merits to both but do not tell me that an accomplished professional boxer will be bitch slapped by one of these guys.

Never happen. If he does injure his knees in UFC then they will have wasted their multi-million dollar investment.

But yes, I would love to say that arrogant Mayweather get his ass handed to him.

Most of the better boxers started as street fighters. They have the wit to adapt to the new environment so rather than trying to purely box, they will simply apply such skills to a streetfight. A style is not a religion, it is merely one tool that you have at your disposal.

Unless you have spent countless hours of every day working that bag, sparring...etc, you have probably never dealt with the speed and accuracy of a boxers punch, so a street fight against one of these guys may not get beyond one punch. A boxer might just send the street-fighter into la-la land before the other guy can make a move.

I suspect that any forward moving boxer who fights on the inside might be at a disadvantage in UFC (unless he also had some ground skills) but the speedy dancy types might very easily frustrate some of the UFC guys. How do you take a guy down for a submission hold if every time you lunge at him he peppers your face with punches while moving out of range. Eventually, cuts will open, eyes will swell shut and the boxer could be in a position to finish the guy.
