piisfish 140 #5 May 13, 2007 the best thing, besides the military stuff for people into that, is that you have a new life, new identity. A record won't necessarily keep you out, but lying about it will. "A legionnaire of foreign nationality can ask for French nationality after three years service. He must be serving under his real name and no longer have problems with the authorities, and he must have served with “honour and fidelity” for at least three years. French nationality cannot be granted under declared identity." Source For anyone considering the Legion, I strongly reccomend reading "Mouthful of Rocks" by Christian Jennings. mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." bazelos 0 #8 May 13, 2007 I think five years is a lot of time, if it was three I would definitely be doing it -trying, that is- after my military service, it's no easy thing though. It's hard to get in, and, depending on where you go, it's pretty much as close as you can get to hell on earth. A very comprehensive forum is this one http://cervens.net/smf/, there's a lot to learn there, past and current Legioners are involved, very informative. Also, check out http://www.foreignlegionlife.com/, and their book on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Life-French-Foreign-Legion-McGorman/dp/0709070934/ref=sr_1_1/102-1283871-7032900?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179056550&sr=8-1. Sum up is this: If your friend has killed or participated in an armed roberry, they won't accept him, if he just nicked a car, or generaly hasn't cause a lot of trouble his convictions are not to worry. The training is very harsh and about two out of ten people make it, don't know what the statistic is like today. They operate in various areas, such as the French Guinea, Djibouti, Ivory Coast, and Corsica (the 2eme REP is based there, the parachutist regiment). It would be good if your buddy can brush up on his French -although you don't need to know the language, they will teach you there- as well as join his country's armed forces for a few years as well. Bon chance! QuoteAll personnel applying for Le légion étrangère are run through Interpol. A record won't necessarily keep you out, but lying about it will. That is the infamous Gestapo. You can literaly spend a full day, or even more, being asked again and again about your life, from the moment you where born till you showed up in Paris. He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man. When I was going to leave for the UK, to go and study there, I got a lot of mixed responces from people I knew, a lot of them did not like the place, but I love it. I think it's silly for someone to consider joining the FFL and expecting to have a 5 year holiday, but without reading the book I can't say much more.He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.
