ffejdraga 0 #1 May 21, 2007 There is a copper mine that I fly over all the time near Casa Grande AZ. All the tandems love looking at it. There has been lots of speculation of the depth of it, and no one seems to know the real answer. It would be nice to know, so I have drawn up the supposed dimensions of it. Given my attachment, is there enough info to solve for x? I also tried looking on google for info about the mine itself, and nothing came up with the depth. The mine is circular, so on the attachment, 2630, represents the diameter at the surface. I estimate the angle to be about 60 degrees, but it could be less. If there is enough info, what would be X if the angle was 45, 50, 55, 60 degrees? Also, the estimation of the diameter is only a guess, so it could vary by 1000' +/- lastly, the bottom line of the mine is represented by water, it goes down below, but how far, I have no idea. HERE is a pic of the mine itself... Either math based or information based answers are all good with me. Thanks jeff D-16906
Remster 30 #2 May 21, 2007 Your angle is a bit off. Typical bench angles are about 55 degrees. Add to that the step-back on each bench, the catchment benches you have every 4-6 benches, and the roads that you need to access the bottom, and you are looking at typical wall angles of 45-50 degrees. The Mine is the Sacaton mine. closed some 20 years ago. Its closer to 1800 ft wide at the crest, so you're looking at somewhere in the 1000 foot depth range. ffejdraga 0 #4 May 21, 2007 Nice Remster, thanks for the info. So can I bank on your guess? what over under would say, 900 +/- 100? 1000+?
Remster 30 #5 May 21, 2007 ***So can I bank on your guess? *** Depends? Is there money riding on it? Then I'm only responsible for winning! I'd like to think its a fairly well educated guess (I'm a mining engineer). Remster

Dude stop being a bitch and just jump it then see what your alt says when you land. Remember to set you Alt at zero next to the ledge before you jump from the chopper. You see how easy that was. don't forget to do a monster Bigboy swoop on the water below and send me the video.I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

ffejdraga 0 #9 May 21, 2007 Darius, you gonna come and help me climb out? It is a long hike. Plus copper/cyanide water means I need to get new gear. I'll pass. But for anyone who wants to, the place is close enough to the dz that it could count as "bad spot" rather than a 'demo' jeff D-16906
ffejdraga 0 #10 May 21, 2007 Yeah man, I'll take the word of a mining engineer, over the word from a bunch of airport yahoos that have been telling me it it 1500'+. 1000 seems more like it. jeff D-16906
