Expensive Cities - Tokyo??? Please enlighten me!

So I have always heard how expensive Tokyo is, as we probably all have.

I am now sitting in my $140 a night hotel room (after tax), and just finished my Korean BBQ feast for $45, having had Sushi boat at lunch for $15. $60, and probably $20 of it was beer.

This is the second time I have been here, and the first time was exactly the same. $5-8 for lunch (plus drink), and maybe $50-$60 for dinner. It was $200 for the room last time, but I was at the Hilton.

What's so expensive?

Seems like people who think it's incredibly expensive may just not look for deals (ie - always stay at the Hilton or Hyatt [which were +/- $300 this trip], eat steak, etc).

Anyone?
