gonzalesna 1 #2 May 23, 2007 I haven't experienced dallas except for the airport, but I love Phoenix. I've got family out there I go visit on occasion. (Might this weekend too!) Lots to do and it's not too far from Eloy. However, it's pretty damn hot in the summer. I lose about 20 lbs. every year in water weight. Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. Personally, I find a myriad of entertainment value when beating it until it becomes a horse-smoothie.
BillyVance 35 #3 May 23, 2007 Phoenix - better weather, drier air. Jumping going on pretty much without any weather holds at Eloy, Plus the Pangburns live out there. Dallas - I guess they have Skydive Dallas, though I've never been there. Never been to Eloy either. PhreeZone 20 #7 May 23, 2007 Dallas is in Texas, not much more to say then that. I used to be there enough I could have practically filed for a part time residency. Its a big city and there is anything you ever want to do in terms of city life and events in the near by areas. SDD is an Otter DZ and is about 45-60 minutes north of the city. Granted if you end up over near Ft.Worth its longer. There are a few 182/smaller turbine DZ's around the area too so you have options. Not sure on their staffing situation, you'd want to talk to them in person about that. Dallas is hot in the summer (like with out AC its a drain on you) and not a single person knows how to drive if it snows or gets one of their bi-annual ice storms. My office closed for 2 days this winter since they were "Predicted" to get snow/ice. Yet I got 6-10 inches of snow a few times and major ice storms and we went to work like nothing was different. Some areas of the metroplex seem to be all about the money in my opinion. If you have it you'll fit in, if you don't I felt like I was surrounded by snobs flaunting they had money (or debt to their eyes ) but thats the same with most cities. I've had the chance to move to Dallas a few times and have turned it down every time for various reasons. mnealtx 0 #10 May 23, 2007 Dallas - Crowded. Long commutes, or put up with city noise. Urban sprawl up to about 20 miles out, now. Rents are high until you get a fair ways away. Hot - summers routinely hit 100 or close to it for about 4-5 months. Not *TOO* humid, but you're also sitting in the lower part of Tornado Alley. Winter temps usually in the 40's or 50's, sometimes down into freezing range. Ice/Snow storms every few years. Christmas day, 1976, it was 65 degrees out. I was in shorts and a t-shirt playing catch with my Dad. Christmas in 1978 there were several inches of ice on everything...Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. hobie331 0 #17 May 23, 2007 SDD(actually in Whitewright, TX) is about the same drive from Dallas as Eloy is from Phoenix. Both towns where the dz's run are small communities. SDD is the friendliest dz I've ever jumped. They are about 6.5 hours south of me and we try to head down every 5-6 weeks. Otter and Caravan. I live in KS and can say the weather in Dallas is similar overall. A little warmer in winter so more ice than snow in TX. It can and does get windy. Basically you learn to jump when it's cold if you want to jump at all. I've only been to Eloy in the winter. Awesome weather then though. We get 100+ jumping days regularly in KS too in the summer. As far as I'm concerned, hot is hot. I do know turbines get to 13.5 faster than C182's get to 10K so factor that in. Oh, and they're roomier too. That's what I can tell about the dz's. As far as the two cities go, I'm pretty clueless. All I can say is. I've travelled to many large cities and they all are hectic and busy. That's my 2 cents(will more like a nickel). Oh, Eloy has the tunnel. It's a gift, I don't try to explain it.
yardhippie 0 #18 May 23, 2007 I'd take Texas over Phoenix any day. Phoenix is hot, damn hot. Who gives a flying f**k if its a "dry" heat, its still f-ing hot. You know like and oven. It still melts shit. Do you have dry skin? You will in phoenix. I never had to use lotion in my life, yet while in Phoenix in a matter of days my skin was cracking and dried out. Property values (like most metro areas) are through the roof, agriculture land is being purchased and converted to subdivisions with poor infastructure. Traffic is every bit as bad as ATL, just like Dallas. Water! WATER! I was out the two years ago for a little over a month and it hadnt rained in 135 days. Some places use reticulation (recyceled sewage) to water grass and plants. yea we get smog here in ATL, in Phoenix they get the brown cloud (dust, emissions, etc) Id say that Phoenix and Dallas have sprawled about the same, though. If you jump in AZ, be prepared for dirty gear. The dirt is everywhere, its a desert. I like cities with large airports, Phoenix has a decent sized airport, but it aint ATL or DFW. I jumped at Skydive Dallas for about two years. They have a Super Otter (20 min call), and a Super Caravan (20 min call), on a private strip with bunkhouses, showers and on site cafe (amazing food). Skydive University is there so their Student programs are wierd, and pricey. There are also lots of teams there who train most the day and leave at night. SDD has some great parties, but there'll be over 100 people there during the day and 20 at night. Both freefly and RW diciplines are represented well. It makes Skydive Atlanta on a busy day look like a weekend cessna operation. When I was there they'd make 20 or more Otter loads with 5-10 Caravan loads in a day. Hope some of that helps. steveorino 7 #19 May 23, 2007 I was born and raised in Dallas area and have visited Phoenix. ASo being very biased I'd prefer the Dallas area (particularly Plano, Allen area as they are near SDD and have great schools) I like Dallas's 4 seasons. Also, the professional sports in Dallas are great but the Suns and Diamondbacks aren't bad. But you still have the Cardinals in the NFL. The one thing I'd prefer Phoenix over Dallas is I'd have less allergy problems in Phoenix. steveOrino

Property values (like most metro areas) are through the roof, I would say that right now, there are some really good deals in Phoenix metro, as far as houses go. There is a surplus of inventory, so the buyer has the pick of the market. You can easily find houses in the Phoenix area for less than $100 per sq. ft. It is a great time to buy a house, if you are not trying to sell one. RkyMtn, if you pick Phoenix, my wife is a realtor here, and can help you find a house. Phillbo 11 #25 May 23, 2007 Like mentioned before, real estate is in the buyers market mode around phoenix. Since you will be heading to Eloy on the weekends, look for a home in the Chandler , Ahwatukee or Gilbert area. It will save a lot of time when you head south. Arizona is hot in the summer but it's worth it given the rest of the years weather.
