leroydb 0 #1 May 26, 2007 I went to the Airport today and flew and found the love of thermals!!! After a reverse launch, I flew around the airport and "semi on purpose" found thermal (at 1700ft) over a parking lot/wooded area. I was rising a lot faster than I thought I would. I was rising with motor on at 1000 feet a min. I was rising at 250-400ft a min without motor. Reached eventually reached 4096 ft; 101mph in a spiral dive. It was 88 degrees on ground, was cold above 3k unless in a thermal, I also covered total of 36 miles and didn't even use 1 gal of gas during the near 2 hour flight. I think I could have stayed up, hopping from thermal to thermal, untill the sun was going down...Leroy ..I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw my bath toys were a toaster and a radio... 1969912 0 #2 May 26, 2007 Sounds fun. Slightly off topic, but do you have a trike or hanging seat system? Which is safer? leroydb 0 #3 May 26, 2007 I have the "hanging seat" version. I'd like to get a trike, but for flying tandem. As for whats safer? I only have a dozen flights with 5-6 hrs flying time... There are a couple people here that can field that better than I can.Leroy ..I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw my bath toys were a toaster and a radio... squirrel 0 #4 May 26, 2007 personally, i went with the trike...simirigid wing, and power to punch through thermals. and, i like to cover ground, the trike has a cruising speed of 45 to 50 mph. i have had some thermals hit my skydiving canopy...scary! but i also went with the trike because after N-numbering it, and getting sport pilot rated, i can carry a passenger. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him? leroydb 0 #5 May 26, 2007 I believe you could get an FAA exemption. I know you can with a PPG...Leroy ..I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw my bath toys were a toaster and a radio...
squirrel 0 #6 May 26, 2007 Quote I believe you could get an FAA exemption. I know you can with a PPG... my trike is over the 254 lb limit, and carries more than 5 gal of fuel... anyway, i want to be able to legally carry a passenger ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him? Thought i was going to get in trouble, but nobody saw it. Damn, i want a powered parachute. Fly every chance you get.
Dust-It 0 #8 May 26, 2007 I started PPG year and a half ago, have 150 hrs. What motor and wing do you fly?Do you fly with a reserve! I've got a 140 Sting and a 26 Revoltion.Fly Products Snap 100 and always with a reserve alot of people wo'nt cary the extra wt.If you thermal you will get some wild rides!!!!!! leroydb 0 #9 May 27, 2007 I have a sting 140, with a simoni gold 130 (28HP). The motor with full gas is near 80 lbs. I have a reserve but haven't flown in condidtions that usually would warrant it. I will be using the reserve in the futire when flying in thermals though. I was in a major themal, getting 1000 ft a min.. is that not wild enough? lol JKLeroy ..I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw my bath toys were a toaster and a radio... Dust-It 0 #10 May 27, 2007 I made at least 40 launches with out a reserve before I had them going well enough to add more wt. No winders at 90 and high humidity are tough enough with out 3 gal. of gas and a reserve. If you can keep your hands, muffler springs.ear pluges, sun glasses, nuts and washers, pull starter handel ,speed bar, toggles etc. out of the PROP life is great. Fly fast. See Ya Chuck
