.kmz workie fine... Need to save as... get prompt for new version of Google Earth and presto.
It's a part of the National Guard base just south of Stark.

I did some panning around, including a look at the Zhills and Lake Wales airports...

They need new satellite photos... at least for Lake Wales. Those from before 2005's destructive hurricane season.

Well, y'all need to zoom in a bit and learn how to interpret satellite photos!

It's definately a bombing range set up like an airport with a SAM site (or possibly MRBM site) sitting next to it.

that makes sense. it looked like something that was trying ot look like something. the planes looked odd, and i thought the other bit looked like missle silos, but the trees threw me off. thanks all! i can go back to being curious about other things, secure in the knowledge that no matter what the question, someone here has the answer. Starke is way north... you might be thinking of Camp Blanding (20th SFG?). There used to be a dz at the airport just S of there... Keystone Airsports, run by J. Davis way back when, which is where my nappy ass first got blown off the strut of his 182. I distinctly remember thinking 'what the hell am I doing hanging on the outside of an airplane at 3500'???' as the jumpmaster was repeatedly yelling 'GO!'. :$

Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...

Yeah, I probably said that wrong. Camp Blanding is the main NG base, but they do some training at Pine Castle. It's not some top secret area 51 type facility or sumpin.

Worked for me.

I'd say bombing range too, there's lots of targets in reveted positions / behind berms and classic SAM layouts, fake target aircraft and quite a few impact craters on the berms in one area.

I turn on the Geographic Web database layer and notice a photo of warning signs in Google Earth taken in that area that say "Laser Range in Use" and "Danger Unexploded Bombs".

Finally info icons in the "Google Earth Community Foruns -> Military" layer tells me that this is the Pinecastle Electronic Warfare Range used by the U.S. Navy, in Ocala National Forrest and some labels even indicate what the sub regions in the database are. For example the craters are all in the "Live Impact Area"

Armed with this you can find some ground views of spring-cleaning in the same area:

P.S.

For all things weird and wonderful, the place to find them easiest is the google earth community forums. The quality of information is mixed tough.

It says right on the link as you pan in "Bombing Range", I wouldn't go hunting there.

Matt

That is because you happened to have a data layer enabled with that icon on in it. probably a placemark in one of the community layers.
