stratostar 5 #28 June 3, 2007 I'm aloud to laugh about it, the OP & I sound the same. A RD said to me this weekend I looked like I wanted to kill him, when I was straining to watch his lips and strain'n to hear him. I have found it at times easier to just nod yes like you understand what their saying instead of asking 9000 time to SPEAK UP MOFO!you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Guest #32 June 3, 2007 Quote And in the meantime, wear earplugs when you skydive. The constant engine noise and the noise of freefall WILL degrade your hearing if you won't protect yourself. And audible altimeters aren't much help either, that's a piercing shriek right next to your ear, even if it doesn't sound like one. Just wear some nice comfy foam earplugs, you'll hear your audible just fine AND protect whatever's left of your hearing. I wore earplugs on my jumps starting almost on day 1 mostly because the windblast intimidated me, but later for simple protection, and encouraged others to do the same. I can hear my audible just fine too. I almost never go out without earplugs. Some of the bars I go to are LOUD, and unfortunately it's stuff I can't stand (read: "Urban" to put it politely). If people notice them they sometimes make fun of me, but I'll have the last laugh when I've still got my hearing and they don't. Wear earplugs when you skydive, and encourage others to do the same. mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."

BillyVance 35 #34 June 3, 2007 Quote Thanks for the support Mike, I'm just a little frustrated right now. Sorry to hear that you have the same type of problem, but I do appreciate the understanding! And about the tinnitus...that's the one thing that I seem to hear clearly, ALL the time. Have you had your ears checked by an ENT, and hearing checked by an audiologist? Sometimes the problem is as simple as excess wax in the ears. Granted that's the best case scenario. You have tinnitus, and that really sucks. If I could have had a nickel for every asshole I've run into in my life like you're experiencing now, I could retire! Misternatural 0 #36 June 3, 2007 Yep, years of hammers, buzz saws,(even with plugs) and shotguns... Son of a crap, Is that the goddamn phone ringing or what? here's a trick I use; when I can't hear someone clearly, I repeat to them what I think they said, for example: if they said: "that wasn't part of the deal we made the other day." I say: What? Izzy farted and re invented the wheel on mothers day? you can also use this tactic to get out of all kinds of stuff.Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. kallend 2,148 #38 June 3, 2007 QuoteHere, here!!! Between tinnitus and congenital hearing loss, I have a lot of problems in noisy environments... so I'm with ya!! At least I always have something to listen to, even if it's only the bells. Mine's from too many hours spent in small planes, but I have the same issues.... Duckwater 0 #41 June 4, 2007 The voices in my head are insisting that I be an asshole to hearing impared people! They wont stop.Semi-seriously though....Mike... come on....I was at your house and your own family was rippin on ya for you to turn up your hearing aids & stuff. It is frustrating at times for both sides, and whatever side loses patience first, the effect is the same - communication stops. If you realize someone has a hearing impairment, pile on the patience. If you are heaing impared and the drunk bubba selling the beer at the nascar race doesnt have enough grey matter to adapt, pile on the patience and find a new bubba. Just wear some nice comfy foam earplugs, you'll hear your audible just fine AND protect whatever's left of your hearing. I must admit, I only hear my dytter in freefall about 50% of the time. Usually I only notice it when it continues to scream after I've deployed. Do ear plugs help that at all?
wmw999 2,588 #43 June 4, 2007 I've worn earplugs since 2001, and have never had a problem hearing my dytter, in either a pro-tec or a fullface.
