Hearing loss - Don't be an asshole about it

Recommended Posts

Okay, I need to vent a little here. 3 times in the last week I've had people cop an attitude with me and start yelling because I couldn't understand what they were saying, even though they know that I now have problems when there's even the slightest background noise present.

I get as close to people as I can, and it helps to watch their lips when they're talking, but I'm not a goddamned lip reader yet.:S I can hear that they're saying something but can't make it out, if that makes any sense, and being an asshole about it and yelling doesn't help me to hear them any clearer, it's just a louder muffled fucking noise!!!>:(

It frustrates the fuck out of me to have to keep asking people to repeat themselves and try to talk slowly and pronounce their words more clearly, but then the great majority of them act as if it's a bother to them. If you're one of those people, try this: Get yourself a cheap set of disposable foam ear plugs and put them in at the start of the day. Keep them in all day as you go about your daily business and see how pleasant it is...You can hear with them in, but not enough to tell what most people are saying except in a very quiet room. See how frustrated you are by the end of the day, and then maybe then you'll have an idea what it's like.

If you know someone who's constantly asking people to repeat themselves, pay attention and notice if they're making an effort to understand you. Take notice if they move closer to you while you're talking, especially if you see them intently watching your lips, or turning their ear directly toward you in an attempt to understand you.

Above all else, remember this: Being an asshole does NOT help me to hear you any better. It does make me not give a fuck one way or the other though.

Thanks for the support Mike, I'm just a little frustrated right now. Sorry to hear that you have the same type of problem, but I do appreciate the understanding! And about the tinnitus...that's the one thing that I seem to hear clearly, ALL the time.:S

Do yourself a favour and stop talking to stupid people !

Now where's the fun in that? :P

Besides...I work in communications support... if I never talked to stupid people the phone wouldn't get answered!! :)

God knows I'd like to, but I seem to be outnumbered.:o:D

Not really...but it sure seems that way sometimes.

I understand the frustration, believe me. Something that's helped me is a calm response of "Why, yes, I am" when someone says "What are ya, hard of hearing or something?" Usually takes the wind out of their sails pretty quick.

I have to laugh...I am deaf in one ear. Most general people dont know this. They walk up on my right hand side and start talking to me. I dont hear them, they walk away pissed off accusing me of egnoring them assuming I am being stuck up bitch.

They turn all :$ when I tell them I am almost completely deaf in that ear...

It does have its benefits...I can roll over on to left side at night and burry it into a pillow and block out most sound, when everyone else needs 2 ear plugs I need 1, and if one of the headphones goes out, I just switch the bad one to my deaf ear

WTF ARE YOU FUCKIN DEAF, OR WHAT!

:P:ph34r:

MIKE: Yeah, it's pretty difficult to explain just how loud and obnoxious the ringing can be unless you've experienced it, especially when the environment you're in is fairly quiet.

My problem lately seems to be mostly with people who already know that I have hearing problems. When meeting new people, I'm pretty quick to explain the situation the first time I have to ask them to repeat themselves.

Yup. I think you were there with Val? I know I met her the same night, in the Bombshelter.

Sounds about right... Loud bars are the worse for me...especially if I am focused on something, I can be completely oblivious to something going on to my right...:$ I normally have head on swivel most of the time even on the ground cause of having deaf side, but every now and again I turn the swivel off and space out when I think I am safe. :)

Where have you been, Under a couch cushion?

When I left Reno I stopped into SoCal for about a year. Working outta Salt Lake now. Been meaning to get down to see you since I'm a little closer...hopefully in the next few months I can get to Mesquite for a few days. Was just asking Pat (at Ogden) about you last weekend.

Actually that does explain a lot (I was sitting to your right). There for the longest time I thought you just didn't like me for some reason.:S:D

No shit ! I'm slightly over 50 and not deaf by a long shot, but have some hearing loss at the high end. If people are giving you shit, just get in their faces about it, when they get a little bit older it will happen to them too. In the meantime they can learn a little fuckin' respect.

And in the meantime, wear earplugs when you skydive. The constant engine noise and the noise of freefall WILL degrade your hearing if you won't protect yourself. And audible altimeters aren't much help either, that's a piercing shriek right next to your ear, even if it doesn't sound like one. Just wear some nice comfy foam earplugs, you'll hear your audible just fine AND protect whatever's left of your hearing. And for you younger punks, well, just rock on, we didn't believe a word of it either....

Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
