BillyVance 35 #1 June 7, 2007 For the past few days there had been a dead animal smell coming from the fireplace. We had recently completed the new kitchen and thus emptied and removed the temporary pantry shelves that we had set up across the front of the fireplace. While shoveling the ashes into a bucket, I found not one... not two... not even three.... but FOUR dead barn swallow carcasses in the ashes. Over the years we kept getting swallows flying into the chimney and getting stuck in the fireplace. The cats always alerted us to activity in the fireplace and every time I was able to catch the birds and release them outside. And kept meaning to get a screen over the top of the chimney, but never did. So we had the fireplace blocked off for 2 months. Figures.... sharimcm 0 #5 June 7, 2007 About two months after I moved in to my apartment, there was a "dead smell" that I couldn't for the life of me figure out where it was coming from. I cleaned everything, took the trash out, etc. and still the smell was around. Two or three months later, my friend and I decided to get the fireplace ready to be used. I opened the flume, and a dead bird fell out. I had the apartment complex come remove the bird and asked them politely to cover the chimneys with screens, to which they obviously didn't. After the first time, I've had two more dead birds get trapped and fall out... Oh well. I'm happy to be moving. There's a true story posted on here somewhere about a divorce gone badly, guy gets house, ex wife does what you said, guy and his new young girlfriend end up stripping most of the stuff out of the room and still don't get the smell out, then sell the house to the ex wife for dirt cheap...
