Its the voltage that stays the same, that is the one thing you can't change. You do change resistance (lower it) which cause current to go up (killing you).

It is the current that kills ya I have been working with neon for years I have been hit by 15,000 volts from a neon transformer a few times it gives a kick but the amperage is really low (30ma)

maybe that's why I enjoy Spence's electric ways so much I have been training for years:D

We had a small electric fence to keep our dogs in the back yard.

First day one male dog peed on the wire:o Next time he peed in the house>:(

Our neighbors had 4-5 kids put up the warning sign ELECTRIC FENCE. Of course one had to try it, than two, than the whole family of seven holding hands.

Shocking the things people do.:o The transformers are cheap avail at pet/box stores, souldn't hurt anyone (Don't get the livestock size). Having someone pee on the bare aluminan wire might be :D:D:D.

First off, we're talking AC, so electrons go both ways (you probably knew that.)

When you drop an electrical device into the water, the issue is that the water will contact any uninsulated part of the device (heating coils in the case of the hair dryer) and form a poor conductive path from the conductor to the nearest ground. If you're standing in a tub and you drop a hairdryer in, nothing will likely happen, since the path is poor (high resistivity) and you'll only see a little current; you will likely barely feel it.

However, if you're lying in the water, and the dryer falls into the tub very near you, you will be a better path to the nearest ground than the water (since you're saltier than water.) Most of the current will follow your body to the ground. If the ground is on the other side of you, then you could get a significant current flow.

The best grounds in a tub are generally the spigot and the showerhead, since they are metal and connected (usually) to copper piping. So worst case would be lying in a tub, device falls into the tub near your head, with your foot touching the spigot. _That_ might kill you.

Note that most modern hairdryers and most bathrooms now have GFI interruptors so this is no longer much of an issue.

Umm... despite popular belief water by itself will not conuct electricity very well, but tap water, and particullary tub water have a lot of electrolytes (aka ions) in it, thereby making the water more conductive.

So, most modern hairdryers have GFI style plugs that look for a difference in the current going out to the current coming in. If the difference is great enough, it usually means that the device is shorting to ground, and it kicks off the circuit, thereby saving your dumb ass for another day of drying your hair in the tub.

Did I answer the question? I'm pretty bad at explaining this sort of thing.

A little bit more to this...
Ohms law says that voltage equals current times resistance. So a high resistance (say 500,000 ohms - about the resistance of dry skin) with 120 volts of electricy will be a paltry amount of current - not even enough to tingle. However, if you lower the resistance say 1000 ohms - the resistance of wet skin, the current now becomes deadly even though it is still less than an amp.

I have a powerpoint of this that I cover with my physics class when we go over ohms law if you'd like me to send it to you.

Huh????????????????? Are you saying that if I make myself a conductor in and AC circuit that there is no resistance (ohms)? Are you also saying that I can not measure or calculate that resistance? When did ohms law become unusable for AC? What planet are you from?

I think he's referring to reactance.

When an AC circuit imposes an inductive load (usu a result of coils of wire), the current and voltage are not in phase, in which case you must use Inductive Reactance, (X[subscript]l) for the "resistance" caused by the inductive part of the load. Inductive reatance is also frequency dependent. X[sub]l=2(pi)(f)(L), where f=freq. in Hz, and L= inductance in Henry's. X[sub]L is in units of Ohms, so once you have a value, you just plug it into Ohms law as if it were a DC resistance, but ONLY if the frequency stays constant. If the freq changes, X[sub]L changes, and you need to recalculate it.

However, I don't see how the water or the person could cause any meaningful inductive load, especially at the low frequency of 50/60 Hz. My opinion is that the DC resistance of the water/person is all that applies.
