TrophyHusband 0 #1 June 24, 2007 my wife has, who is on call, has spent the last two nights in the hostpital, and hasn't slept since thursday. that is fine, it goes with the territory. this morning she came home, took a shower, and then crawled into bed. after twenty minutes of blissful rest, the phone rings. no, its not another laboring patient, its a recall. she has to get up and go back in to work. meanwhile, its highly likely that she'll get called back in sometime today to take care of a patient. friday night when she got called in, the gate guard wouldn't let her through because of an exercise. the hospital is right inside the gate, and not involved with the exercise, they just close the gate during the exercise. she informed the gate guard that she had a patient about to deliver a baby and that she needed to get through, but he still wouldn't let her go. he made her go around to another gate 15 minutes away. i get that the mission of the air force isn't medicine, but while they're doing exercises and playing war games, my wife is dealing with real patients and delivering real babies. last night she did a real c-section on a real person. would you want your baby to be delivered by her this afternoon? Beerlight 0 #2 June 24, 2007 wow, I hated recalls also during my AF service. Sounds like someone hugely freaked up there. Has she run this thru her chain of command? If so and no help, the IG? Good luck to her.... But really now, it's not the entire Air Force that's fucked up, always just a select group of people.
TrophyHusband 0 #3 June 24, 2007 the hospital is run by nurses. they seem to have chips on their shoulders when it comes to the docs, so whenever something is brought to their attention, they find a way to make life worse for the docs. at this point they're afraid to bring up anything. unforunately, its going to take something bad happening to a patient because of doctor fatigue in order for things to change. Krip 2 #4 June 24, 2007 If the dude at the gate is in the air force instead of a rent a cop. The next time anyone from his outfit goes to the hospital for a physical the nurses will get "the word out"Don't mess with the nurses, bend over and STOP RESISTING. KY is for officers only, unless your on alert
TrophyHusband 0 #5 June 24, 2007 i'm not sure if he was civilian or air force. usually they have civilians guarging the gate, but during the exercise they probably have a bunch of airmen. if that's the case, the likely got a kick out of "pulling rank" on an officer. someone coming in laboring is urgent, but not exactly an emergency. if it had been an emergency, i'm sure she would have pushed the issue further. my wife doen't like to make waves, but this is something that needs to be addressed in one way or another. unfortunately, she's afraid that to avoid this in the future, they won't tell the gate guards to let the docs through, they will just make the docs take call in the hospital. Beerlight 0 #6 June 24, 2007 If it's that bad (and it sounds like it is), then she should send an anonymous comment to the IG. That's what they are there for.....

Way to formal and the chain of command thing. A very extensive physical from a male nurse with big hands to the next A.P. dude will get the word out. Don't mess with the nurses. One Jump Wonder

TrophyHusband 0 #9 June 24, 2007 unfortunately the nurses here don't care enough to do anything. almost nobody at this hospital looks out for anyone else. its kinda sad. "Your scrotum is quite nice" - Skymama www.kjandmegan.com
Beerlight 0 #10 June 24, 2007 butttttttt, before she does the IG thing, she needs to try the chain of command. It would be a mistake not to. If someone were to go straight to an IG complaint, without her chain not knowing... it would be a bad thing. Lots of people would be pissed off and I'd imagine it would haunt her for a while...... TrophyHusband 0 #11 June 24, 2007 her chain of command already knows about this weekend's happenings. the problem is that they normally do little to nothing to solve actual problems. they don't want to make waves either. that is the way with the military. its the same basic thing that was behind the walter reed thing. making waves can ruin a career. nobody wants to do that. Krip 2 #12 June 24, 2007 Quote unfortunately the nurses here don't care enough to do anything. almost nobody at this hospital looks out for anyone else. its kinda sad. Damn times have changed, sounds like a leadership issue. To bad. We worked for DOD for 21 yrs, the IG would come around once a yr sit in a room for a day waiting to hear people who had issues. The IG was 100% effective. No people ever visited them.
TrophyHusband 0 #13 June 24, 2007 the leadership is terrible. last year when the 3 top people in my wife's chain of command in the hospital were leaving, we had high hopes that the new leadership would be better, but they're worse. maybe the next set will be better. Krip 2 #15 June 24, 2007 In our DOD job the military "Leadership" would change ever 2 yr's but the career civil service folks on the "Executive staff" wouldn't change until they retired. So every time we had a change of command show we already knew there wouldn't be any changes. Even after the executiver staff started to retire they were replaced by other career civil service folks who had been "groomed" for their job for 20 yr's. Once in a while the cream would rise to the top but it was rareOn a positive note at least you wife isn't in the ARMY (a four letter word) and seeing the bad shit coming back from the sand pile.
