Sports trivia: Why is it so important?

Why is it OK for a guy to know all kinds of trivial details & history about pro sports and he's considered cool, but if he knows the same level of detail about other topics (science, art, history, literature, etc), he's a geek?

I was just thinking this on Saturday when I went into a bar that had all these Trivial Pursuit cards sitting in glasses on the bar. And they were all about sports trivia only.

Good question. Especially when the guy that knows the most sports trivia is the morbidly obese dude that spends every evening propping up the bar

Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
