boinky 0 #1 June 23, 2007 Does anyone use Vongo? Or seen it work? Any thoughts or opinions? 1969912 0 #2 June 24, 2007 I had never heard of it until you posted. Went to the Vongo web page to see what it was, and my PC is totally blocked from entering their site because I have an "unsupported opeating system". That's a first. I use Win2K, and would have to buy XP or Vista just to go to their page! I smell Microsoft marketing tactics lurking around. Well, it turns out MS is partners with Starz and Vongo, and MS probably hates people like me who never cough up the $ to upgrade, and when it's time for a new PC, just build one up and continue using their old OS instead of buying one with Windows preinstalled. Anyway, I was able to learn something about it from other sites. First, it couldn't hurt to blow $20 to try it for a couple months. Second, don't expect much better than VHS quality video on a PC monitor. If you plan on feeding the video to a TV, the picture will get even worse the bigger the TV is. Third, plan on waiting a loooong time for the downloads, even with 3Mbit/sec DSL. Fourth, you are "renting" the movies. MS DRM will apparently not allow you to burn them to discs. Fifth, the "unlimited movies" for $10/month is a bit misleading. You will have to pay between $.99 and $3.99 each to watch newer movies. I have no idea what is considered "new", and what is old because I'm banned from their website. Sometime tonight I will post links to some good/bad reviews. Can't remember which ones were best right now. Anyway, hope this helps! If you try it, please post your results. 1969912 0 #3 June 24, 2007 Here are a few links to comments/reviews of Vongo. Some people are having trouble uninstalling Vongo, but AFAIK that only applies to some laptops that come with it preinstalled with Windows. http://www.j2eegeek.com/blog/2006/01/05/no-vongo-for-me/ http://www.sharkjumping.com/2006/01/vongo_review_2_.html http://www.nodans.com/index.cfm/2006/9/22/Im-warning-you-Vongo http://www.russellbeattie.com/notebook/1008728.html http://techzilla.vox.com/library/post/vongo-review.html http://www.newstarget.com/019356.html "Once we got to the point where twenty/something's needed a place on the corner that changed the oil in their cars we were doomed . . ." -NickDG
boinky 0 #4 June 25, 2007 Thank you for all of your hard work doing research for me. I haven't decided whether I want to join or not. I know that Netflix is also running a promotion where you can download and view movies on your computer. I'm going to have to consider that option too. If I go with the Vongo, I'll post my results.
