Newbie rig/canopy size recommendation

Recommended Posts

Hello, i'm looking to buy a rig soon (within 3-4 weeks), I'll try and do that after i get my A license (if i can finish it before i have to go back to school), and i'm looking for good recommendations. I'm 5'8, ~144-145lbs. I did some research and reading on the gear for my future rig that i would like to buy new next summer. I've narrowed it down to
Containers:
Infinity
Racer 2k3
Javelin
Odyssey
Wings
Mirage G4

Main canopy:
Firebolt
Sabre2
Safire2

Reserve most likely is PD. I'd like to know if getting a 180-190 (maybe even 170?) canopy is too soon or not? I've been jumping 220 and 210 during AFF, will try and get some jumps on something smaller tomorrow. I've had no problems at all with these larger canopies, all stand up landings
Any advice is appreciated.

Well, I'll recommend heartily what I have: Infinity container, Fusion main.

The Fusion is in the same class as the Sabre2 and Safire2, and for whatever reason is often overlooked. With the HMA lines, it'll also need to be relined less often, and depending on where you shop, can probably be found cheaper than either of the aforementioned canopies.

That having been said, buying brand new gear might not be the best idea, if that's what you're planning. Brand new container makes sense to a certain extent, but the canopy less so.

You just mentioned to six of the eight most popular containers. They are equal in terms of reliability. Comfort will vary, but that is a very personal decision.

The only rig that stands out is the Racer, because it is the only one that requires a 2-pin Cypres, which costs $125 more.

Which brings us to another variable. Ask your local rigger to make sure that he/she enjoys packing your choice of container.

Finally, I am curious about why you did not mention Talons or Vectors?

Don't rule out Wings. A lot less expensive than Javelin and Mirage. A very comfortable Rig and very well made!! It was designed by the same guy who helped design the javelin.I love mine! Try going to WWW.para-servive.com AKA rigs and things and check out the prices. You will not regret it!!
