TrophyHusband 0 #1 July 5, 2007 i need a way to fill my fresh water tank in my rv from a stream or river. i'm thinking that a small water pump that does between 1 and 5 gallons per minute and can run off of 12vdc, 110vac, or gas powered. the goal is to be able to take showers while camping. DougH 270 #2 July 5, 2007 I bet grainger has what you want... some where in that huge book!! Also McMaster Carr has a good selection of pumps."The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
diablopilot 2 #3 July 5, 2007 You're gonna regret it when your fresh water tank starts growing things. Make sure you look into a treatment system.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
squirrel 0 #4 July 5, 2007 totally agree... get a high end filter for whatever pump you choose, or find out what it takes to clean out your fresh water tank. or, better yet, construct a "shower and dishes" supply tank, and keep drinking water separate. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him? TrophyHusband 0 #5 July 5, 2007 i've thought of that. i would bring potable water for drinking, cooking, and dish washing. i would then have to sanitize my fresh water system when i got home. this is something that may only happen a couple times a year. my wife prefers to camp in campgrounds with full hookups, so i would need to do this when i convince her to go into to real woods. if its just me, i can jump in a lake or stream and be happy with that as long as its warm outside. i would also need to do this during hunting season when its too cold to bath in a stream. skydveraz 0 #6 July 5, 2007 Check out Harbor Freight. 2 pages of pumps.. http://search.harborfreight.com/cpisearch/web/search.do?keyword=water+pumps&Submit=Go Arizona only has two seasons, Hot and HOTTER!
mnealtx 0 #7 July 5, 2007 You'd do better to carry extra water in, in a plastic 55 gallon drum for that , or, if you HAVE to use untreated water, use a solar shower. I've been there and done that, and it was a LOT more trouble and expense than it was worth to clean out and sanitize the fresh water system...Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. TrophyHusband 0 #8 July 5, 2007 what all is involved in sanitizing the fresh water system? i'm new to the rv thing so i haven't had to do it. i though it was something that you had to do periodically anyway. CSpenceFLY 1 #9 July 5, 2007 All you need to sanitize is a little clorox. I do mine once or twice a year but I use mine often an only use my well water. I would, as someone already suggested ,get a good filter system if you are going to fill out of a stream or lake. It won't hurt anything. You just want to clorinate the water and keep out any debris. Rv waterpumps do not take kindly to chunks.
normiss 892 #10 July 5, 2007 experience with chunks?I'm sure you could tell some stories about the RV....
warpedskydiver 0 #11 July 5, 2007 I saw a guy cannibalize a camp membrane filter (hand pump type) and use it inline with his RV. worked pretty good and could be backflushed to clean it. made a nice hunting shackof course it was a small RV( no shower), so you may need something bigger. At least the coffee tasted good
skydveraz 0 #12 July 5, 2007 Check out the following type filter. You can get them at Ace Hardware, Lowe's, and even at some Walmart's. I have one in my fifth wheel and I use it with a replacement carbon type filter to remove all the smell and fish taste from the phoenix metro water system. Works great!!! With a couple of fitting, you can use it with rv water supply hoses. Hope this helps.http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1422252&cp=1255003.1260951&parentPage=family Arizona only has two seasons, Hot and HOTTER! warpedskydiver 0 #13 July 5, 2007 I have a similar one on my house, so every tap is filtered, even the waterheater and garden hoseswhat the hell right? everything on the water system is not cheap, Besides you should see what comes through our pipes, and this is supposed to be the most advanced municiple water system in the state.I once found a piece of a bolt come through, small but it was there. you could see a couple of threads. (1" copper service) I've found all kinds of stuff in mine also!! I think there is even the bones of a fish in there.. The water around here either comes from the lakes or the CAP project. So, what's the difference between this water and water from a stream? The stream water is probley better!!!Arizona only has two seasons, Hot and HOTTER! funjumper101 15 #15 July 5, 2007 A cheap bilge pump from wallyworld or kmart will do the job. 12v and the plumbing parts are cheap. You should be able to fab up the whole thing for under $50.00. You might want to calculate the highest you'll ever have to pump the water from the stream/lake up to the tank inlet. Make sure you buy a pump that can lift that high. As Chris posted above... some chlorine bleach will usually do it.... but there's always the possibility of fungal growth, microorganisms... better not to mess with it unless it's an ABSOLUTE necessity, IMO. In the long run, it really *IS* simpler to either bring a barrel of water in to refill your tank, or use a solar shower if you can't. Giardia is *NOT* fun!!Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. TrophyHusband 0 #17 July 5, 2007 giardia was the major concern before posting here. now sediment and algea are a concern. i know that there are filters for rv's that can't hurt to use even using potable water. what i have to research is if they can filter out something as small as giardia. i rented a trailer last year without a water system and stayed in it for a week during hunting season. not having a shower sucked. i also want to be able to bring my wife camping someplace besides a full hookup campground. i'll keep the 55 gallon drum idea in mind. it may turn out to be the best option. before doing anything i'll flush and sanitize my system just to see how much of a bitch it is.
