Nightingale 0 #1 July 6, 2007 Growing blood oranges, in particular? I think I'm addicted to these things, if it's possible to be addicted to a fruit. The thing is, the closest market that sells them reliably is about 25 miles from my place (and yes, I've driven down there just for oranges). I guess my question is, is it possible to grow one of these trees in southern california, and if so, can I grow it in a pot on my balcony?
normiss 895 #2 July 6, 2007 Given that Cali competes with the citrus industry so well here in Florida, I don't see why you couldn't. BIG pot on balcony though. They also only bear fruit once a year if I'm not mistaken, just like all oranges, tangerines, grapefruit trees. It might be easier to grow orange pot on your balcony... billvon 3,116 #3 July 6, 2007 Sure. As you probably know you can't grow them from seed, but there are plenty of places that will do the graft and then sell the trees when they're old enough. We have a bunch of citrus in our yard that's doing fairly well. Dwarf varieties (i.e. standard citrus scions on dwarf rootstock) are ideal for pots. Nightingale 0 #4 July 6, 2007 Awesome! Thanks so much! Can you recommend a nursery, or should I just check around?

warpedskydiver 0 #6 July 6, 2007 You picked a damn nice fruit tree to grow, probably the best orange there is for nutrition. and they are native to Sicily, so you might want to match those conditions. Try doing them a an outdoor hydroponic system, small and very very productive. plus the consistant feeding/watering is a key to success. Try the ceramic marble things as a medium, and make the pot heavy so it won't tip over in a strong wind.
