should i have gone to the hospital?

Recommended Posts

i had a little mishap with a chop saw last thursday. i decided that i didn't need to go to the er, but other people feel different. in my defense, i cleaned it out myself, my wife brought home antibiotics, and most importantly, i have extra pain meds laying around. i decided that the only thing an er was going to do was fuck with it, so i decided not to go. should i have gone to the hospital? would you have gone?

Nah you are doing the right things, just keep an eye on it for infections, and let it breathe dont keep it bandaged and covered all the time
You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky)

I hate doctors, but if it starts to smell bad, go.

And hit up your buddies for some spare antibotics.

A friendly dose of a Hydrogen Peroxide pour over the wound daily doesnt hurt either.
Be yourself!

my wife got me some antibiotics. i was camping all weekend and hit it with hydrogen peroxide today and it hurt like a mother fucker. i won't be doing that again. it will be an open wound for a while, so infection is a big concern. i can get more antibiotics if necessary.

I remember years ago when I had severe case of road rash on my elbow (took the skin off down to the bone)
I had to go to the hospital every three days to have the scab burnt off with some liquid till enough new skin had grown to fill the hole,
hurt like hell.

Gone fishing

You will soon find out.

;)

I'd say better safe than sorry and have a doctor have a look at it before it becomes infected or something.

Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet.

I'm a BIG, TOUGH BIGWAY FORMATION SKYDIVER! What are you?

yes you are on the right path, keep it very clean and NO hydrogen peroixide, that stuff eats away at good flesh as well.
Flush it with plenty of water, and iodine solution mixed with more water.
keep the dressing clean and yes if it starts to smell, turn funny colors then by all means go to your doctor.. about the meds.. the normal route is ten days of meds three times per day.
good luck.

I hate going in for personal reason as well... (Thanksgiving, I had a little scope bite that no one would sew up for me... so what if you could see a little bone... just a stitch or two would close it. Memorial Day, I rolled an atv on my ankle. Ended up just being a sprain, but took me over a week to get the xrays, ect) I've seen too many people come into the ER with silly shit and don't want to be one of them, so I kinda go to the other end of the spectrum... and so it seems, do you.

That injury, keep an eye on. If it scabs over and starts healing well, you're clear. With ANY sign of infection (don't wait for the red lines going up the arm.... or the gangrene) go in. You might need IV abx. Don't do the H2O2. It actually does more cell damage than good. Just keep it clean.

Should he do any debreiding as well?
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

Ya know - if he uses an HCL solution it will heal slow enough that you may not know it was ever injured.:D:D:D:o:)

With the injury as described, there shouldn't be a lot of dirt in it to debride, but if there was, that should have been step one. Daily debreiding? Doesn't look like a whole lot of tissue damage. I honestly thought about recommending silvadine at first... but then thought about the injury and didn't. He can... but it might be overkill.

i would love to say that's the case, but the truth is i'm just a huge pussy and the though of them poking and prodding it and cleaning it makes me squirm. since i have leftover narcotics and can get an antibiotic prescription without going to the er, i decided to not let anyone else touch it. besides, i haven't had the best luck with air force er's.
