Radiology Techs?

Recommended Posts

One of my best friends from h.s. (many trips around the sun ago), who was always much, much smarter than I am, is a rad tech at our little hospital. Since she's so good at what she does, she's absolutely invaluable to us docs who aren't radiologists. I KNOW she loves what she does, and it'd completely suck for her not to be around.

I spent 6 years doing xrays at an urgent care and I enjoyed every minute of it. It can get rather boring at times due to the amount of patients you see in a day but when you are busy you work your butt off.

Ha ! That is funny. X-ray techs are not in demand anymore and they sure as heck don't make that much money...especially for the back-breaking work that they do (morning portables). I've been doing Nuclear Medicine and Positron Emission for 14 years and that is where the money is. I just hired a girl right out of school last September and started her off at a low 70K per year. I make 90K. And the work isn't back-breaking. Ultrasound is the same way...The only difference is that Nuclear Medicine, X-ray, MRI, and CT, and Mamms are all saturated ! So many people flooded the field that jobs are few and between. I remember in Nucs 5 years ago, you could name your price and where you want to go. No its saturated because the schools put out way too many students. It may change the more PET becomes popular over the next 10 years. Ultrasound is in its glory right now. Name your price and location. X-ray is not where you wanna be after several years of doing back-breaking work, and most of the time for Asshole rads.

P.S. Nursing is the true way to go. It is the most demanded job in the country right now. Let me correct myself...most demanded "profession". THey make killer money, travelling is great, great opportunity, and if you get bored in the burn unit...go to Med/Surg. If you get bored in that....go to ICU, then go to surgery, then go to Dialysis nurse, then PCU, than, NICU, then Peds, then research.... I think you get the point. Nursing potential is endless. If I could do it over again, that is the route I would go. Its not about wiping asses anymore. That is more for LPN's, or more likely CNA.

Huh?? My wife is a ER/ICU nurse and Im XR/CT/MR, we travel together and havent seen that saturation you speak of, we go werever we want, Denver/Boulder last and in CA right now and have a house in FL. There are no CNA's in ICU or in the ER, in the ER theyre usually medics and they arent about to wipe ass FOR you, theyll do it WITH you. Oh yeah and Ive always made more than my wife. Funny she says the same thing about radiology as you say about nursing... When we stop traveling she wants to go into Nurse Anesthesia, Ill quit working and jump more...B|

Nuc Med def saturated. US too much call. Rad Therapy is smoking right now and Dosemitry is on its way. But its like any job its what you make it, and the grass is always greener on the other side.

I also do Apps. for Siemens Medical (independant contractor) on the side and always thought it would be cool to travel and have an expense account. Tonight I ate dinner alone and right now Im sitting alone in the lobby of my hotel in Phoenix AZ typing this, its 102 degrees outside (at night) it aint so green on the other side. I just want to retire:P

Anyways Nuc Med techs are a little funny, too much time locked up without any social interaction, as demonstrated by the way you demeaned the OP about their job and how much money you make. Im sure you didnt mean to, you just cant help youself.:D:D:D[:/]:D

I made a pile of money and traveled everywhere, stuffing radioactive sources down holes... B| Good fun for a few years.

The oil industry, that's where the money is ;) But decided it wasn't my destiny...

Just about anything in the medical field is in demand now. I have been in the "medical field" off and on for the last 15 years. Im and RN in ICU and make more money now then I ever have. Most of the RNs and Rad techs I know make "good" money but the ones that make GREAT money either travel or work a shift or two a week of over time.

I love what I do right now, there's things that suck about every job but I enjoy taking care of my patients and I enjoy the challenges of ICU. I also like knowing when ICU gets boring I can go to the ER or any place I want to. Its also nice to know that at the end of the week I'm going to have enough money in the bank to go out and buy my son a new pair of shoes without worrying about not being able to pay a bill because I spent extra money. It's cool to finally have cash in my savings account too.

There are a handful of jobs you will always be able to get no matter how bad the economy gets

Teacher--- kids always gotta go to school
cop--- people always gonna break the law
medical--- people always gonna get sick
bar tender--- people always gonna drink

DIdn't mean to "brag" about how much I make. BUt to anybody interested in the Rad field, if you are going to stay with it, you may as well specialize. Why break your back doing xray when you can make twice as much doing US, or Nucs and NOT break your back? This field isn't my first choice in a line of work. I was also a police officer for 5 years. Loved every minute of it. But, I'm making 3 times as much and I'm NOT getting shot at, or at the least having the potential to get shot at every day.
I got out of Nuc traveling because it was totally saturated. Cover for short vacations and maternity leaves mostly. Where I came from out of Ohio, most xray techs couldn't find a job unless it was PRN. Even up here in Alaska, xray techs either don't have a job...or work PRN. They have to slide into a full time position when they can. Its definitely not like it was several years ago.
And yes..I agree with yo that Nuc Techs are usually fucking weird. I've ran into so many "odd" people in my field. I've actually been thanked one time at a traveling gig. The radiology staff came over and thanked me for being "normal". THey said the last 5 techs they had were "fucking weird"! I do concur with you on that point.
