Organized People

Not those who are obsessive about being neat, but those who are organized...do you have a "system" that you use for your kitchen cabinets, frig, and bedroom clothes closet to keep things organized? I need your tips!

Thanks!:)

What does your clothes closet look like? all of the pants and shirts together or mixed together? do you have certain clothes folded and only others on a hangar? ...my closet is a MESS!!! I can't even walk in there to get to what I need.

For starters, you must gradually switch to wooden hangers and space your clothes at least one-inch apart. This will help them last longer.B|

I group shirts together, pants, jackets, etc. But, then each are organized by "work only" then "both work or play" then "play only" for each category. I don't organize like colors, though. But, I won't keep a red shirt next to a green--looks like Christmas.

Jeans & casual shorts I keep folded on my open-shelves so I can still see them all at once when deciding which pair my amazing bootie shall grace.B|:P

Shoes are typically organized right shoe forward, left shoe backward so I can see both the front and back of the shoe when browsing.

It will take you some time. But once organized, it's super-easy to keep that way. I am faster at getting ready than any of my "no maintenance" friends. I never stand forever wondering what to wear and/or trying on a billion things, nor looking for things.

I can be ready in two seconds for anything.:)

Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

I don't know if I'm organized... but here a few things I do...

My closet is arranged in 2 large groups: casual and work clothes (with a small really formal section in the back)... within those two categories, shirts and pants are seperated... and those categories break down by color, and eventually by long sleeve or short sleeve...

I have two laundry baskets on the floor... one for dirty light clothes and one for dirty dark clothes.

As far as things in my kitchen go, I have the stuff I use all the time in the top shelves and stuff that I rarely use under the counter tops. My silverware, glasses and plates are all easily accessible from one corner, which also happens to be near the dishwasher.

As I'm super busy with work and evening classes, I've also started cooking my meals for the week to come on Sunday. I'm watching what I'm eating and how much I'm spending... so I make a meal plan, shop accordingly and then seperate my meals/snacks into zip loc bags or containers. All of Monday's food goes in one plastic container; I have one container for each work day. This helps control caloric intake AND I spend so much less time preparing food during the week. I eat a ton of produce, so it's pretty easy. However, people tend to think I'm crazy when they see my fridge... I'm just a busy health nut is all. :D

I throw away anything I haven't used in a long time... or that isn't pratical or extremely sentimental.

That's all I got for you. I'm curious to see what other people have to say.

We have one laundry basket and one empty rack above it.

The rack is for clothes than can be worn again, but should be washed if doing a load.

I separate my loads come laundry day--no need to have a separate basket for that. You never know when you'll have more of one thing than another and have to deviate from the traditional plan.B|

Throw the stuff out you never use and then organize what you do use.

Never keep anything you think "Oh, I'll use this one day." You won't. It just creates clutter. ACK

We're fairly organized for a house of 5 peeps.
When we go through the mail, it's recycled/shredded or stacked for further attention. Our kitchen is fairly squared away. It's big and we cook a lot, so things have fallen into place.

But Valinda has a home business, I have a wood shop, reloading equipment, parachute gear, the list goes on and on. We have sooo much stuff. I know where everything is in my garage, but it's still hard to walk around it all.[:/]

Group like items together, it really helps even in the fridge and pantry. Everything should have a place where it belongs, don't just throw it in someplace. When you put your groceries away, put them away in the right spot. It also helps when you are going through your cabinets to see what you have run out of so you can make a list (if you do that sort of thing).

Don't let things stack up on counters, like the mail. As soon as you bring it in, go through it and file your bills, throw out the junk mail, put magazines in a rack, etc. Don't let clothes pile up on a chair in your bedroom, put them away. In the closet, I also have everything separated and organized; dresses on one side, long sleeves on the upper rack, short sleeves on the lower rack, skirts and sweaters on the other side with shoes on a shoe rack underneath. There's no room for anyone else to share my closet, but that's not my problem. :P

In the kitchen, organize things logically. Pots near the stove, glasses near the refrigerator, etc. Make it easy on yourself!

I'm a disorganized person who's managed to become more organized.

Kitchen? Glasses next to the refrigerator, dishes next to the stove (serve onto them). Pots and pans close to the stove. Reduce the stuff under the kitchen sink to the minimum. I keep all of the other cleaning stuff on a shelf in the laundry room, and only the trash can, kitchen recycling, dish soap/detergent, and couple of flashlights and extra sponges under the sink.

Bedroom? Dirty clothes hamper in the closet. Clothing sorted by slacks (all together), jackets (all together), suits (all together), dresses (all together) and blouses (sorted by color). That's how I remember them.

I couldn't agree more about NO WIRE HANGERS.

Making your bed in the morning, and not going to bed wtih dirty dishes, have both struck me as utterly pointless in the path. But it sure makes me feel more organized by nature, now that I'm encouraged by living with someone who naturally does that.

I sooo would love to come over and mess up your closet... (entropy is a good thing...)

my mind is relative organized (ok... maybe not but at least I'm delusional... :P) and I am capable of organizing things... and I usually start fairly organized when I move into an new place, etc... its just that it never really lasts very long... :D:P

it is amazingly fun to just move stuff around on people like that!;)

move the decorative towels spacing or turn them around
exchange two nick nacks on a shelf
change picture spacing on shelf
move her purse from one cabinet to another
take the toilet paper roll down and just set it on end on top of the roller

(thanks to Nick for these awesome ideas...they're soooo much fun!);):D:D:D

My Closet ... I have a fabric hanging shelf (to the left of my pants) for my underwear and socks (different shelfs for different colors). I have a belt hanger (to the left of my pants) and a tie hanger (to the left of my shirts with collars). I keep my shoes under my pants and shirts (organized similar to my pants). I have attached a "rough" diagram. The rest of my house is also organized.

PS: I like order, you got a problem with that? :$ It helps being a minimalist.
