Duckwater 0 #1 July 19, 2007 http://www.bluemoon-outfitters.com/SkaggsMarlin/mikeskaggsgandermarlin10264.html It is the 2nd largest ever caught in Maui and I can barely move today. My back, shoulders, legs and hips are trashed. Tony Dominico....it was 10 times harder than when you and I had 5 tuna hit at the same time and we landed all 5... Duckwater 0 #3 July 19, 2007 I gave it to the captain. Is only worth about 30 cents a pound and if they cut it up to give you meat it cost 2 bucks a pound (2 grand)...Having it mounted will be 3 grand and I dont want a 15 ft fish hanging anywhere anyway.....Digital pics and video will suffice for me,

jtval 0 #12 July 19, 2007 not with deep sea fishing . Pretty much the purpose is to catch fish you can eat. Even if the cather does not want the meat the capt usually takes the fish and sells the steaks at the shore. Some charters are specifically for that. you can fish and take a portion but the fish goes to the Capt.My photos My Videos

Walt It's been a long time since I did any kind of fishing but I may have been as old as 14 last time I went deep sea fishing. one of my old boss' had a charter boat that he would take people on and he would get a cut of the profits in order to pay for his expenses. My photos My Videos

Walt I would have been impressed had he missed the cage and the sharks devoured him! Here's why I was unimpressed. If he had missed the cage, he would have had some chance of surviving intact. Let's take the possibility of death and serious injury off the table and replace it with absolute humiliation. What if that shark cage was replaced with some spotlessly-clean container of the same size and it was surrounded with a 10-acre, 12 ft. deep pool of the most vile mixture of diarrhea shit, blood, puke, and maybe Rosie O'Donnell just to make it extra nauseating. Now, let's see some guy do swoop accuracy on *that* on live, national television where he gets paid well for the stunt if he succeeds and gets absolutely nothing if he fails. Now *that* is risk-taking. I'd say the shark guy just doesn't measure up to that standard. Walt

If that doesn't make him feel like a hero, what would?Walt Count me among the unimpressed. It is (or was) a spectacular fish and she may or may not have bred; sadly, that is no longer an option for her. For the uninformed, virtually all marlin over 250 pounds are female -- it is even regarded as highly likely that they become female once getting over 250. Catching her was a workout and very impressive indeed, but the pointless taking of such fish is highly discouraged by the International Game Fish Association. Most big money tourneys these days are catch, tag, and release. There is even a highly reliable method of determining the fish's weight using length, girth and certain numeric factor (sbout 1.6 or so, bit hazy on it right now) so that it can swim off and the angler can still have his/her bragging rights. Modern taxidermists don't even need the fish to make an accurate and faithful replica for the wall. For all its beauty, Hawaii is in the dark ages regarding billfish; most other places, including Central and South America have gone to c-t-r. Maybe they'll learn when they can't find any. When I got my first Atlantic sailfish, I passed on getting a replica mount made for the same reason as the OP, but TLML had a poster size photo made for me for that Christmas and it is sitting proudly on the wall to my right as I type this; she was last seen swimming in the direction of Cuba. We love catching fish for the table, particularly dolphin (mahi-mahi) and wahoo, but not bills. Congratulations on your catch, but boo, hiss to the captain. Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money. Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?
