skydveraz 0 #4 July 20, 2007 Try downloading Adware- SE and Spybot. It usually finds stuff that Norton Utilities doesn't find. They have cured problems for me. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popup-Ad-Spyware-Blockers/AdAware-SE-Personal.shtml Arizona only has two seasons, Hot and HOTTER! 1969912 0 #7 July 20, 2007 Need more info. How often does it happen? What apps. are open at the time? Have you tried to see if its related to any of the apps. you are using? Any recently installed apps? You can open the Task Manager and go to "processes" (under "options" check "always on top". Under "view" set fastest update speed). Let the TM window sit there, and when the problem happens, see if there are any new processes that pop up on the list. 1969912 0 #9 July 20, 2007 A second might be too fast for it to show up on task mgr., but give it a try. Try closing any background apps. (antivirus, firewall, etc.) one at a time and see if it keeps happening. What OS are you using? 1969912 0 #11 July 21, 2007 So if no apps. are open, it doesn't do it, but if ANY app/apps are open it does, even with all background (AV,Firewall..) apps closed? I use win2k, so some of this might not apply. Go START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS>EVENT VIEWER. In each of the three logs (application, security, system), clear all events and close. After the problem happens next, open event viewer and see if there are any events logged. jtval 0 #15 July 21, 2007 have you tried hijack this? I am not sure that it even exists anymore but ,despite the name , it is a free computer scan that you can find online. I love it.(when I used to use it)My photos My Videos
1969912 0 #16 July 21, 2007 Quotecleared the log and waited for it to do it again then checked the log, nothing in it Did you have Task Manager open at the time? If so, did you see a process pop up? I tried it on my PC and new processes show up immediately as long as the update speed is set to quickest. If an icon is showing up in the taskbar, its process should also show up in TM. What's interesting is that it only happens when at least one of your apps. is open, but it doesn't matter which one or how many. Spyware scans usually look for known bugs but don't necessarily find any hidden processes. HijackThis is good, but you need to know how to interpret it, either that or post the log and hope someone helps with it. At one time I found a hidden bug (that spy scans missed) with it myself based on instructions somewhere on the web. Can't remember how to do it. On http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx there are a bunch of small, free utilities that don't require installation - you just run them and when done, no uninstall is needed. Here are some to play with: AUTORUNS - shows all processes that start on bootup. Hide all microsoft entries, then look for anything without a vendor name or that looks funky. You can set anything so it will not start at next boot, and if it's not the problem you can reenable it again. ROOTKIT REVEALER - Finds hidden RootKit spyware PROCESS EXPLORER - Shows tons of detail about processes that are running on your PC PROCESS MONITOR - Can be used to monitor and log all processes, file activity, and registry activity "Once we got to the point where twenty/something's needed a place on the corner that changed the oil in their cars we were doomed . . ." -NickDG

1969912 0 #18 July 21, 2007 Good deal! It didn't really sound like malware. In case you're interested, I found the tutorial for HijackThis. I used it once and it was pretty easy to find and kill the bug/trojan/whatever it was. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#intro "Once we got to the point where twenty/something's needed a place on the corner that changed the oil in their cars we were doomed . . ." -NickDG
