kallend 2,113 #1 July 26, 2007 FAA SIMPLIFIES, SHRINKS ADIZ (www.avweb.com/eletter/archives/avflash/931-full.html#195743) The FAA will reduce the size and simplify the geography of the Washington Air Defense Identification Zone cutting 1,200 square miles from the zone and removing 33 airports. The new zone gets rid of the so-called "Mickey Mouse ears" that described the complex shape of the old ADIZ and creates an almost perfect circle 30 nm across, centered on Washington. FAA Administrator Marion Blakey made the announcement at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh today. The new ADIZ takes effect on Aug. 30. Blakey said the new ADIZ was shaped based on consultation with aviation groups and the 20,000 comments received from the public when the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking was issued two years ago. "Score one for GA," she told a happy crowd that loudly applauded the decision. ------------------------------------------ Hard to believe the FAA actually listened to users of the airspace!... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
JohnRich 4 #2 July 26, 2007 But you just told us in another thread how the government was trying to take the sky away from private pilots. Which is it?
pilotdave 0 #3 July 26, 2007 The large ADIZ is a major pain in the butt for the FAA. An area where anybody can fly, but you need to jump through a bunch of FAA hoops for every flight. I'm guessing this was a cost saving measure, not a pro-general-aviation measure. Still doesn't help the airport I used to fly out of, which is inside the flight restriction zone. Getting cleared to fly in and out was a huge pain. Got fingerprinted by the FBI, got my secret PIN number, but never had the chance to actually do it. The ADIZ was bad enough... tkhayes 348 #4 July 26, 2007 it is both - they are still working on many issues against GA. Reducing the ADIZ size is a complete surprise to me - you'd almost think they cared or something.
JoeBobinNC 0 #5 July 26, 2007 This shows how excellent a tool the NPRM comment period is to facilitate change. I think too few people are aware of it. It doesn't matter if a cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice.
