pinkfairy 0 #1 July 29, 2007 Can there be a more boring sport to watch? I mean, the game takes ages, and hardly anything happens, just people running around, and goal scorings can be as few as zero. And the most popular TV channels here broadcast it for hours at a time, often several channels showing it at the same time sp there's nothing else to watch. No, give me more show jumping and 4-way skydiving on TV.Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet. I'm a BIG, TOUGH BIGWAY FORMATION SKYDIVER! What are you? pinkfairy 0 #3 July 29, 2007 Nono, that's the finnish. And when norwegian season ends, there's english football on TV. They show it all the time, cross country skiing, which is also incredibly boring, is only broadcasted during winter. I really can't see the attraction. Scoop 0 #7 July 29, 2007 QuoteSoccer on TV again! It's called fucking football. So called because you use your feet to kick a ball. Simple. Only the yanks can get that muddled up. So don't follow their poor version of the English language

pinkfairy 0 #9 July 30, 2007 Quote As compared to a 20 minute ride to altitude for one minute of play time? They edit that out in the video. Hey, they could do that with soccer too: just edit away everything but the goals, and the stupid match would be over in 2 minutes. pinkfairy 0 #12 July 30, 2007 QuoteMeh - another chick that doesn't like soccer - who'd have guessed!? But i mean come on - Show Jumping?! Well, if half the population doesn't like soccer, then they shouldn't broadcast it for hours. We don't have that many channels in Norway, and they tend to show football matches at excactly the same time. Show jumping is always fun to watch. Beauty, grace and harmony between human and animal. This is combined with danger and speed, and is therefore the perfect sport. And they hardly ever show it on TV, because all the time is taken up by the stupid soccer. It's not just me who like showjumping, it's really popular among women and girls.Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet. I'm a BIG, TOUGH BIGWAY FORMATION SKYDIVER! bluepill 0 #13 July 30, 2007 Quote Well, if half the population doesn't like soccer, then they shouldn't broadcast it for hours. If 50% of the population like it, then its good enough. I expect many many people know where and when the last Football world cup took place. But would many know where and when the last Show Jumping world cup took place? Quote Show jumping is always fun to watch. Beauty, grace and harmony between human and animal. This is combined with danger and speed, and is therefore the perfect sport. Most of the top show jumpers come from upper class backgrounds who send their horses to specialist trainers to get their horses to jump at the highest level. Many of these 'top trainers' use very "questionable" techniques to achieve this. So I dont think show jumping is the perfect sport. But if watching a bunch of hooray henry's riding around on a scared shitless horse for pocket money is your thing then Sky TV have launched "Horese & Country" which should cater for your needs. (if you get sky) BP

(if you get sky) BP Well, no sport it perfect, and yes, participants use in most equestrian sports use proffessional trainers, because they wouldn't have time to train all the horses they would have to train to find a good one themselves. This, of course, makes top level show jumping expensive. I'm not so familiar with the economics of show jumping, I know more about icelandic horses, and there, some of the top riders aren't necessarily rich, even if their horses are very expensive, they get to ride those horses because they're good and the horse's owners want it ridden in competitions. As for training methods: There will always be varying opinions on how to train horses, some are only for clicker training and treats, and accuse people who use more traditional methods for cruelty to animals. There's a similar discussion on this about dog training. I do not have the impression that most top show jumpers today are "scared shitless". I know what a scared horse looks like. I wouldn't participate in show jumping, but I do think it's a good spectator sport.Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet. misaltas 0 #16 July 30, 2007 It's interesting what makes a sport boring or exciting. Example. I can't watch tennis. Just two people hitting a ball and grunting. Every match looks exactly the same. My cousin played competitive tennis for a long time, and watches good matches all the time. I tried to find out why, and it's cuz he sees so many things going on that I don't. So I've found it mostly has to do with how much experience you have with it. With american football, rhys sees helmeted thugs crashing into each other for 2 seconds then fat commentators talking about it. Most american football fans also see the complex chess strategy of it, not just the checkers. (and commericals? tivo!) Same goes for the 'real' football. I see 90% passing and dribbling to setup 2 seconds of very occasional action. And far too many fake injuries and horrible cry acting. I'm sure the rest of the world's 'football' fans see a lot more than that. And don't get me started about nascar...Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts
bluepill 0 #17 July 30, 2007 Quote "scared shitless". I know what a scared horse looks like. Ok probably not the right terminology, but definately not always enjoying the experience as much as the spectator thinks it is. Been involved with horses for a long time and live in an area with a number of trainers. I have seen some of the training methods used for the top horses and I wouldent put any horse of mine through that for any amount of prize money. Put a (American) football, basketball or baseball player on the pitch and they'll call for substitution after ten minutes of play because there's no time out. Not to mention the beautiful release of angst when the team of your liking finally scores a GOOOOL!!. There's nothing quite like it! And the joy of seeing a war-torn nation see some happiness after its team wins the Asian Cup Final (I take it that's the game the OP was referring to). No other sport can bring such emotion to so many people... Lots more to say about this but I've said it before...you summed it up best -- soccer (football, futbol, calcio) ROCKS!! skymama 37 #24 July 31, 2007 I agree. You have to know the game before you can understand how a 0-0 game can still be exciting. There are positions to understand, strategy and angles of attack. They kick the ball with different sides of their feet, and on both feet, to accomplish different things. My son has been playing for 11 years now and he still has a bunch to learn regarding touch and ball control even though he's been on the premier teams for the past 4 years. It's way more than just kicking a ball around for 90 minutes. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
