Do You Leave a Tip at a Hotel/Motel?

Recommended Posts

For those of you who leave a tip. How do you decide how much to leave?...

- Is it based on a percentage of the bill?

- Whatever you happen to have in your wallet at the time?

- How clean the room is?

- How pleasant/awful your stay was?

- Or something else?

Has anyone had a job cleaning rooms? What was your experience with people leaving tips?

They get a paycheck, so no.

I actually never heard of this until a few years ago, and everyone I know does not leave a tip.

Only time I've left a tip was on a cruise, and actually that was paid for, but I left extra cause I thought the standard amount was kind of crappy.

If you stay 1 night at a place why should you tip???

When I vacation in Mexico, I do. We usually stay at the less expensive hotels and leave a couple of dollars every day, a little more the day we check out. But the maids at these hotels only make a few dollars a day without our tips, they work really hard and when you do tip daily, you'll usually find a few extra surprises in your room when you return at the end of the day. Stuff like flowers, maybe an extra bottle of water, extra towels if they know you're cramming 3 girls in one room and you're all showering twice a day- that kind of thing.

It never occurred to me to do this in US hotels until recently, and honestly, I haven't done it. I don't travel all that much, though.

it depends.

If I stay in a hotel for a while...long period vacations, and I like the maid that cleaned the apt the 1st time... I can def. ask her to clean it the other times and leave her a tip.
do they get a pay-check? yeah... but that does not mean that it's a really big one.

be nice with people... life pays you back:)

Yes, when I leave it in a real mess. :P

Then it's usually about $5. I like to think that maybe I randomly made someone smile for the day. :)

I'm actually a great tipper just about everywhere I go, unless I receive poor service.

I don't feel obligated to tip, but I remember when I worked in a coffee shop (very briefly!) or even any place that I gave customer service. It always made me feel great when people would say how good of a job I was doing for them, or if I'd get a tip. :)

No, I don't tip but I also can't stand being in a messy room so I pick up after myself. There's not much for the maids to do!

This reminds me of a conversation my son had with my brother. My brother was telling Nick about an all guy ski vacation he was about to go on. Nick said enviously, "You're so lucky. I bet you'll get to leave stuff laying around in the room, won't you?" He said nothing about how great the skiing would be.

Sometimes I tip depending on how long my stay is, whether it is a hotel/motel, or my mood.

I usually always leave a tip for the maids when I go to Vegas. I didn't the last time only because I felt like they were begging for money when I saw an envelope with her name on it saying "place tips inside envelope." Um, no... Don't ask for it, and most of the time, I'll give...

No way!

Why not? Would you consider not leaving a tip in a restaurant? Do you think the maids cleaning your room are paid better than a server in a restaurant?

I have to admit that I don't have a problem in tipping in a restaurant more than 20 percent, but I resent leaving a tip in a motel... especially a percentage of the outrageous bill!!! I've started leaving $5 at the end of my stay, but I'm feeling a little guilty for being so cheap when I'm not cheap in a restaurant.

I don't know why it should be any different. The maids probably need it more.

you should have wrote on a piece of paper," Here is a tip, don't beg for tips and maybe people will leave them more often, I would have."

I agree with my stalkee skymama. I don't leave the place a mess, so I don't think they have anything overly out of their way to do. I usually leave the do not disturb sign on the door when I stay multiple days so that they don't have to do anything. When I need towels, I'll ask.

Not a sorry chance in hell. Tehy get paid minimum wage or maybe better.

The waiters are paid I think about 1/2 of minimum wage because tipping is factored in. Do I tip well in restaurants? depends on how much the bill was, how demanding we were, and their overall attitude. A charming waiter/tress can help overcome shitty food timing by the kitchen or whatnot. Make my evening enjoyable and I'll try to do the same at check time.

Tipping the people already making a full paycheck? Not a chance.

I don't get extra for doing my job...why should they?

make someone smile every day

smile..say goodmorning ..smile

I have to travel 60 times a year for 3 days per trip
you see hotel clerks and staff..airline staff ..being fussed at all the time..they just work there and are not the ones making the rules..but they get the grief

slow down, smile say something nice and do not hesitate to say something to someone in charge if you get good service

yea I tip the room cleaner $2 per day

From what I've heard, you have to tip daily because the maid one day may not be the one who cleans the next day. I usually leave $2/day. If I had a wild night in the room and I have all sorts of stuff scattered about, and they clean it, I'll give them more.

I don't like tipping at motels though. If I'm going to be cheap staying in a motel, I might as well be cheap and not tip, right? The only tip I got the last time was... Well, read my sig line... :o:D

As a Brit' I can not understand Americans obsession with tipping. People should be paid the proper rate for the job they do... if they dont, look for another job.

I understand that waiters etc EXPECT a % of the bill.. WTF? If I decided to have a £100 bottle of wine, rather than a £20 bottle, why should the cork puller get a bigger tip - the cork's the same size:S

P.S I have no problem what so ever of paying for good service but staff payment is the duty of the business owner.

Yes $3-5 per day or more depending on the attention to detail of the person cleaning the room.

Someone said that the same person might not be cleaning the room each day. Thats not entirely true excpet if your there for an extended period then you may get someone different on the off days of the person asigned to your particluar floor/rooms.

Question for those that said no what are you thinking? The people cleaning your room are the ones you want HAPPY. they are all alone amongst your stuff. Do ya think it might be a good idea to treat them with some respect and dignity?

MAKE EVERY DAY COUNT

Be happy they have a fucking job. That's where my concern with their happiness ends.

So basically you're saying that I should pay them not to steal my shit? Last time I checked that isn't in the job description.

Check your stuff before you leave, and keep track of your shit. Bust the hotel's ass if they employ a fucking thief.

Tip them not to steal my shit.......well, I guess if you have money to piss away, go for it. I've never had a problem.

I tip generously in a restaurant for good personal service.

Cleaning a room is maintaining the motel's property. I don't tip for routine maintenance. Would you tip the motel plumber for fixing a leak?

I treat motel staff with respect and dignity.

It's the waitress who can spit in my risotto I want to be happy. :)

Hmmm...that's why some liveaboard SCUBA operations are now charging Brits gratuity fees when they book, rather than making it an option.

I don't tip in hotels in the USA, but do in parts of the world where it is common. Conversely, I don't tip at all in countries where it is not part of the culture.
