dqpacker 7 #4 August 2, 2007 Bad deal. We were just down in that area the other day. Cnn is saying three dead but It was rush hour traffic and stopped traffic on the bridge. 35 is a major highway in MN, It goes from Duluth to Dallas, Tx. A jumper from here is a St. paul firefighter and is probly down there. Thoughts for everyone.
wildfan75 1 #5 August 2, 2007 Brad has posted pictures of the bridge on his facebook account. He must be okay. They were talking at least 30 contruction workers were on the bridge when it collipsed plus it was bumper to bumper traffic as it was rush hour. It is being reported that all the kids on the school bus (ages 8-12) are alive, not sure on the condition. DQ--I'm sure Joel is kickin' ass down there! Just reported one confirmed fatality. 29 casualities at HCMC (Hennepin County Medical Center--the closest level 1 trama center)

lawrocket 3 #7 August 2, 2007 I saw this picture in a Yahoo news story. http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20070802/capt.784683cac46b446baaa5ba30c18966d5.aptopix_bridge_collapse_mnjm101.jpg?x=380&y=264&sig=A3XmMmOZe0RMEsPHvfukcA-- It's got traffic cones and a porta-pottie, which tells me there was construction going on. So I reckon there were repairs of some sort. Anybody know what was going on? Was there some sort of retrofit or something going on on that bridge? And, considering that it looks like only two lanes were open on each side, would that have had any effect in lowering the casualties? My wife is hotter than your wife. dqpacker 7 #8 August 2, 2007 From what they are saying the construction was under the bridge. They just said fifty cars in the water and twenty to thirty workers on the bridge. I guess most workers were on top resurfacing the road but some were working under it(private contractors)
Snowwhite 0 #9 August 2, 2007 When they did the repairs on our bridge (also over the Miss.) they removed every third girder under the deck, and replaced them.skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com
wildfan75 1 #10 August 2, 2007 Construction was not structural. DQ posted something about underneath. I haven't heard anything about underneath but that they were working on the pavement on the top. The bridge was built in 1967 and they built it to have no support beams underneath from the ground up (one sheet of something so it was unnecessary; not a very wide part of the Mississippi, bridge was 67 feet high). The one confirmed fatality was due to drowning. 6 critical. 22 non-life threating. Just from HCMC. No reports from other medical centers/hospitals.
