LisaM 0 #1 August 3, 2007 Anyone here ever had a spinal tap (lumbar puncture)? Will I have to lay there for hours?? Will I hurt bad afterwards? Will I be able to drive home? ~ Lisa ~ Do you Rigminder?
BillyVance 35 #2 August 3, 2007 QuoteAnyone here ever had a spinal tap (lumbar puncture)? Will I have to lay there for hours?? Will I hurt bad afterwards? Will I be able to drive home? I had one done when I was getting steroid shots for a bulging disc. Not much pain, but you will not be driving home. Remster 30 #4 August 3, 2007 QuoteDo they make you wait for an hour or two before releasing you? INSIST on waiting a few hours, layying down, without getting up. I have the worst headhacke that lasted 2 full weeks nonstop, with nausea if I sat or stood up, becasue I was released after 30 minutes.Remster

BillyVance 35 #6 August 3, 2007 QuoteDo they make you wait for an hour or two before releasing you? Depends... I went in three times for steroid shots over a month and a half period. My experience was a bit different each time as far as the anesthetic went. I went to sleep twice and woke up later, and the other time I was awake but my legs felt like lead and I would have just dropped to the floor if I tried to stand. LisaM 0 #9 August 3, 2007 It's in 3 hours. My docs think I might have something called "intracranial hpyertension". Something about the cerebral fluid in my brain and spinal column not draining properly. My optical nerves are swollen causing some pretty funky vision and I can't get rid of this darn headache. Great to know many have a headache after the LP for up to 2 days. The spinal tap is to test the pressure of the fluid in my brain. ~ Lisa ~ Do you Rigminder? Where in your back is the tap going in? LisaM 0 #11 August 3, 2007 They mentioned my lower back but that is all I know. I have strict instructions to make sure they get the OPENING pressure reading so they don't release pressure and then take the reading. skydiver30960 0 #19 August 3, 2007 You'll be fine. People freak out about lumbar punctures because we don't like needles in general and REALLY don't like the idea of a needle in our spinal column, because we know how important it is to us. But LPs are done all the time, all over the world, on people of all ages. The headache comes from the loss of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). When you stand up, more fluid moves out of the cerebral space and the headache worsens. It takes about an hour for your body to make all new CSF, so a minimum of an hour flat on your back is the standard. You may need longer, it'll be up to you and your practitioner(s). Definitely let someone else drive home. Hang in there.... Elvisio "don't worry you won't have to watch" Rodriguez

DFWAJG 4 #21 August 4, 2007 Intracranial Hypertension used to be called Pseudotumor Cerebri An LP will relieve the headache. My only concern, though, is the fever that you experienced a few weeks ago. IH/PC doesn't present with fever. I hope they run cytology on that fluid. LisaM 0 #22 August 4, 2007 The tap was horrible. May I never have one again. The pressure was normal. They said if that were the case the'll send me to a neurologist. My back hurts like hell. The gal doing it had issues and then the guy that took over made me feel sharp twangs in my leg. But they have got to figure out why my optic nerve is swollen. This vision thing is making me loopy. added: They did test the fluid for something but I don't know what. I should know that Monday afternoon. ~ Lisa ~ Do you Rigminder?
