How do satellites get in outer space?

I never hear of any launches to get a new verizon wireless or Fox news satellite into orbit. Why is that?

quite a few launches are not done in the states, we do a few here in OZ and there are a bunch done in Europe too

It also depends on the type of orbit they will be entering (LEO, Polar, Equatorial, etc.) as they have to leave from different sites to reach the correct inclination.

Also how interesting is it to hear "Verizon launched a new satellite today....*crickets*."

A space shuttle or global imaging/weather satellite/phoenix mars landing launch is WAY cooler
Puttin' some stank on it.

Verizon, Fox, MSNBC etc do not launch/run their own satellites. They lease time on satellite transponders operated by other companies. That's what we do.

Well there's a part of the space industry I did not know...thanks bill ;)

Many "private" satellites are not launched from the US. Some are launched from Europe, but most (to my knowledge) are sent up from facilities in the far east (Japan, China etc).

When I worked for Verizon's predecessor, GTE, the small business unit, GTE SpaceNet, launched all its satellites from points on the Pacific Rim.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh

Make light!

Hughes is one of those companies. They have scheduled a launch from French Guiana. They are "hitching a ride" on the Ariane 5.

Rockets are the dominant insertion method. Here's a pretty cool one. I've been aboard and they've quite the impressive set-up:

Satellite insertion is one key reason why launch sights close to the equator are of strategic importance - though if you've a mobile launcher like Sea-Launch you can take your rocket to whatever latitude you desire.

Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. Personally, I find a myriad of entertainment value when beating it until it becomes a horse-smoothie.
