Congratulations! :)
How has the experience of skydiving changed for you over the past five years? Is the rush now as good as it was in the beginning?

What do you call a beautiful, sunny day that comes after two cloudy, rainy
ones? -- Monday.

Good question Jenn. I never actually got that big YAHOO that you so often see in first jumpers.
I didnt do a tandem just AFF, but I'm a task driven person, and all my focus was on performing the skydive corectly. I'm also a geek so I looked into accident rates, and gear fairlure for students so I was pretty cool an calm about the jump. (althoguh I did near shit myself when the 182 door opened;)) When i got down after jump 1 i said to the instructor, man that was a lot of money for that:|.
He siad he had a similar experience when he started, and to have a couple more jumps if financesd allow.
well i had the money so i did a few more jumps. all the way to AFF6 and still no YAHOO.

So my instructor told me to save some money and go do a few solos, to see if that changed anything.
IT DID
no drills to do no assessements to meet, just out the door and check out the view, it was on my 7th jump I actually took REAL focus on the ground, and watched the big X on LZ get bigger and bigger and bigger.
I landed on the X and as i touched down about 20 feet from my instructor i let out a BIG YAHOO.

I get a little peaked if i havent jumped in a while, like now (6 weeks off) but I do it for the challenge of trying to get better.
I've been trying for over a year to get my head down happening and it sucks arse. so thats my challenge at present.

But your comment makes me wonder: Why do some people get the rush and others don't? Is it all chemical? Is it that you might have experienced more or had a "higher" stimulus previously (not chemical, but activities that could have sensitized the area)?

I don't get the rush every time... but I do get an amazing relaxation with letting go of the strut and a complete focus during the one minute of freefall that is quite nice (no other random thoughts intruding)

But anyway, congratulations on the realization! B|B|B|:D

Well probably both, I was an active drug addict for 12 years, and from a lot of the stupid shit i did in my teens and 20's I'm lucky to have made it though. So I have had a lot of diffeent fear based stimuli.
But i dont think that's it for me. I honestly beleive it's both focussing on the task to the occlusion of the surrounding envronment, and having faith in the equipment and instructors.
Losing students is bad juju for the company and the instructors, so I never had that "I'm Gunna die" thing

If you look at the stats, there's never been a safer time to be a student in our sport. Students used to be half the fatalities in our sport. "Time is sport: one day, Cause of death: impact" used to be a constant refrain in Parachutist's Magazine's fatality reports. Now the U.S. often goes an entire year without a single student fatality. That's the way it should be.:)
Now, if we can just keep our experienced friends from getting killed, I'll be really happy.

At 70 jumps right now, I find myself oddly calm psychologically. I know I am nervous on the ride up because my body goes haywire (stomach feels like a cement mixer). Mentally though, it seems that I know that I've done it before and that I've done my best to prepare for the jump. I should mention, however, that the last few jumps I've made have been purely fun jumps.

I find that I get a real kick out of a successful dive that I've worked hard to achieve. That, and of course, events that push your comfort level, like no-wind landings (at first I used to get scared shitless by the horizontal speed, but after figuring out the cause I've started to enjoy it more).

... my 2 cents worth of random babbling...
