Well, I mentioned again to my mom during a conversation about a future vacation home on Cape Cod, that I really want to enlist in the Coast Guard and become a rescue swimmer, and that when I do I could request posting at CGAS Cape Cod, and I could watch over the house in the off-season. She thought that was amusing, and seemed much more willing to listen to my reasons for wanting to become a rescue swimmer. I would almost say that it sounded like she thought it was a good idea, but I hesitate to say that because she's never thought any military job was a good idea for me. I know we had a problem getting promoted in our MOS (the now defunct 31C) way back when because there were so few NCO slots, and so many of us freaking E4's.... We had tons of E5's holding E6 jobs because they wouldn't promote any of them, either...Then they ended up putting OUT a bunch of E4's and E5's on 'up or out', another defunct reg that stated that you either got promoted within 'X' amount of years, or you were 'dead weight' to the US Army. I'm betting these past 5 years they're really wishing that they hadn't done that...
