woodpecker 0 #1 August 16, 2007 Its decision time and wondering what opportunities are available for one with a TS clearance. Any help is appreciated. No one here plays in that world so hard to find out where to look and I'm tired of hearing...."oh, you have a TS that pays". Where, who pays and where? nanook 1 #3 August 16, 2007 clearance jobs.com. opm.gov Important. . .Make sure your TS is current. It's only good for five years. If it has expired, there's no incentive for the company to hire you over over joe-blow fresh-out-of-college applicant. Those clearances are exceptionally expensive. Don't leave service without it. There's no such thing as a "used-to-be-TS" clearance._____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln
mnealtx 0 #4 August 16, 2007 Agreed on the "don't let it expire" option! I had a secret and let it expire, it took over 2 years to do the re-investigation.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706
Broke 0 #5 August 16, 2007 You see now the problem is, is that even in the goverment clearances do not transfer. Our new director of security had to have his whole clearance redone even though he had a higher level clearance from the Department Of Energy.Divot your source for all things Hillbilly. Perhaps in some instances - while commercial clearances have equivalent non-commercial clearances, they don't transfer over. Zenister 0 #10 August 17, 2007 Quotedefinately dont let it expire generally the individual has no say in this... the company/organization has to pay for and approve the update when it occurs..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. FlyboySMB 0 #11 August 17, 2007 A TS is a DOD clearance & it should be good for any position that requires a DOD TS. They don't hand out TS clearances like Secrets, you have to have a sponsor (ie: A customer who says you need one, Air Force, CIA, NRO, bla bla bla). They are few & far between now days (TS). Usually a TS is a stepping stone to a "compartmentalized" bingo tag. Oh, how I miss taking lie detector tests that if you fail means loosing your job! Zenister 0 #12 August 17, 2007 correct, but if your employer doesnt have a 'sponsor' for everyone that needs that level of clearance for that contract you might not be renewed at your current level.. the individual usually has no say in this whatsoever.. it is a matter of billets and sponsorship. so all the posts of 'don't let it expire' are silly.. you don't make that decision generally, your job requires it or it does not. Even when sponsored the costs are 'eaten' by someone, if you are not directly DoD that is usually your employer.____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. mnealtx 0 #14 August 17, 2007 No, the 'don't let it expire' statements are not silly, if you look at it logically. It's a shorter way to say 'keep a job that will keep the clearance active, since it's such a pain in the ass to have it redone'.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. woodpecker 0 #15 August 17, 2007 thus the problem has risen. I dont want my SCI clearance to expire before I have a chance to use it. So anyone working with companies who require these, please let me know. I've done the searches on the websites, but everything is "2+ years experience". How/where can I just cash in on having a clearance and the company will teach me what I need to know, or is this not how it ever works? thanks for the replies.....SONIC WOODY #146 There is a fine line between cockiness and confidence -- which side of the line are you on? Getting hired just due to having a clearance *can* happen...but it's very rare, in my experience. As for the experience things... apply anyway!! The worst they can do is say that they're looking for someone with more experience. Clearance jobs shows 450+ jobs for TS/SCI...that's about as good a list as you're going to find with an easy search. You may get some results from a job search at Dice or Monster with a TS/SCI keyword. Good luck!Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. enflyt 0 #17 August 17, 2007 here's a better thought- dont do anything STUPID once you have one- ie, financial problems, dui's, drugs, etc. i've known a few who screwed themselves that way. no fun for them. not that anyone intends to do that, but just be careful

It's a shorter way to say 'keep a job that will keep the clearance active, since it's such a pain in the ass to have it redone'. unless you have total control of your contractual assignments that isn't really possible for an individual. Once youve got one smart companies will try to keep you on the right projects so yours never expires, but again that isnt exactly up to the individual.____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. One of my former soldiers (ages ago when i was active) got hired right out of the Army into an 'FBI intern' program based on her undergraduate degree, desire for forensic training and her TS SCI, but I dont think that is the 'norm' (she was also one of the "smartest cookies" i'd ever run into in the military).____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
