Wired Mag: "Technology Makes Skydiving Foolproof"

Recommended Posts

All that and no jump??!! Probably for the best...apparently, he can't ride a motorcycle either, would've ended up doing a "Lutz"...:S:S:S

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

What a LOOOOOSER!>:(

I have driven motorcycles since age 9. I currently drive a fast motorcycle (although I try to keep it near the speed limit.):) I am also a tandem & AFF instructor. I have seen a lot more people get hurt\maimed\killed on motorcycles than in my 10+ years in skydiving.

Apparently they keep making better fools, then. Like, say, the author. :S

You know I say the comments on everything these days is stupid but in this case i'd probably comment myself if I didn't have to sign up. I'm too lazy.

Fool proof yet you didn't jump? Go play some more xbox friggen baby. Big wow on his speed on the bike. I'm not saying speeding is safe, but 90 on a bike is nothing to most these days, almost foolproof!!!:P

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

lol @ the way he added in 90.

"now involves about as much skill — and as much risk — as riding a roller coaster."

I wish, or else there'd be no need for that 1500$ AFF

"On the way to SkyDance SkyDiving in Davis, California, I hit 90 on my motorcycle."

"Every technology has its limits — and I'm not willing to test them at 13,500 feet."

So It's Perfectly exceptable to hit the ground going 90 but at 120! Seems logical?:S:D

Believe me I think he did the absolute right thing not to jump if he didn't want to but, since he posted about it in a public forum I now have the right to make fun of him for it:D:P

and I know you get desensitized to things over time. I bet he would have been to scared go 90 his first time on a bike. I just think his logic is funny. He is brave in the sense that he made such a big deal of publicly telling everyone how idiot proof skydiving is and then saying he couldn't do it:D

ive used this point to help convince a few people to try...

most people cannot accurately explain how a modern braking system works, rarely even look at it themselves, much less participate in its regular maintenance and yet have complete 'faith' that when they press the pedal at 90mph the car will stop. In addition you must have faith that not only your own brakes will function as desired, but that everyone else's around you will as well..

As skydivers (smart ones) you can inspect every part of your equipment personally, you can control its 'reset' directly and verify its condition prior to each jump. The description of the process involved to slow/stop you is fairly straight forward (in comparison to modern anti lock brakes) and yet which system do more people entrust their lives to every day??

note: this is not a 'safer than driving' argument. It is simply pointing out the levels of 'faith' required in each technology.
