BlueSkiesKel 0 #1 August 23, 2007 I have a superman lunchbox, most of you know that.. my coworkers have seen me carry it to work everyday... so what? right? Well today, I was told I shouldn't carry it because it was "unprofessional" ... as you can expect that was a surprise to me, as that is one word that has NEVER been used to describe me, especially by anyone that has worked with me, truthfully thats the last word i think anyone would use to describe me, no one has ever called me that, and i've had a superman lunchbox to carry my lunch for years. I'd like to say that people judging me after seeing something as trivial as what I carry my lunch in didnt bother me, but it did. Officers talking behind my back makin fun of me or my lunchbox without knowing what kind of person I am, or why I even have it, them judging me..um yeah.. thats professional of them isnt it. I know I shouldnt let them get to me but I feel like I want to defend myself soI guess I'll explain... my friends know that I like superman, only my close friends have bothered to ask why.. so why superman?... He may be a fictional character, but his values, what he does and who he is, is something to aspire to be... a person filled with honesty, someone with courage, someone who always stands up and fights for what they know is right... so.. I always have a superman symbol somewhere in sight, hell, I have it tattooed on myself, it reminds me to always be myself and stand up for other people, stand up for myself and most of all be a strong person, and this isn't a bag of crap I made up.. supermans motto is "Truth, Justice and the American Way" and i'm proud that I want to live up to that. So... I have something to look up to and that helps me be the person I want to be, I'd like to think that most people have something to look up to that helps them be the person they want to be. if you dont understand me.. go ahead.. talk behind my back, you can judge me, but i'm not afraid to be me, i'm not afraid to stand out, I dont want to be like everyone else, so yeah.. i was upset.. now i'm like whatev, at least i know i'm professional and those that have worked with me know i'm professional (my OERs prove it) ok.. done venting for the nite... cocheese 0 #6 August 23, 2007 tape the letters : KEL over the man part. Super Kel, you're our super hero. My boss said i was unprofessional for speaking up during a once a year meeting.... meanwhile he and his brothers were chewing tobacco during the business meeting. Joking about it later almost got me fired.Stay cool and let them make fools of themselves. Collect the pay check and laugh on the way to the bank. Oh and go fight some evil. skymama 37 #15 August 23, 2007 My 18 year old daughter is totally into Superman and just redid her room at her dad's house in Superman colors. I'll have to ask her if her reasons are the same as yours. As for your lunchbox, was it your Superior who mentioned it was unprofessional or just a co-worker? If it was just a co-worker, tell them to MYOB!She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

DFWAJG 4 #17 August 23, 2007 a fellow classmate at the college, but a higher ranking officer... It's a classmate, huh? Well, all you need is time, Kel. Success will be yours in the end. It's not where you start, it's where you finish. My guess, is that YOU will eventually be his superior in no time. People like him won't go very far. Just came back from my 20th year reunion. I got teased and criticized all through school by my classmates. The woman who organized the reunion wrote "Dr. DFWAJG" on my name tag. I didn't have to gloat at all. And my nemesis' as there were a few no longer hold a candle to crytonite!
BlueSkiesKel 0 #18 August 23, 2007 thanks... i'll try to keep that in mind too.. hope you had fun at your reunion... i was a big dork (band geek) in high school, i sometimes wonder what folks that made fun of me would think now.. but then i realize most of them are prolly still sitting back in the small town not doin much and i've been all over.. and skydive.. hehe... so we've got that.. so we've gotta be miles ahead of the rest of those whuffos
DFWAJG 4 #19 August 23, 2007 you are absolutely right. One of my nem's saw the picture of me on classmates.com jumping out of the otter. In the bathroom, where a bunch of gals, including her. after I walked in, she said "there's dm, she's a crazy woman. she jumps out of airplanes!" I then proceeded to tell them all about my accomplishments over the 20 years. It was a great bathroom chat (and gloat)!

Gawain 0 #24 August 25, 2007 You are correct in that it shouldn't matter what you carry your lunch in. I don't know if you plan on staying in the Coast Guard as a 20 year career or not. It should come as no surprise to you, however, that in the military (if you'll permit me to refer to the USCG as that ), perception is everything. You don't need to stop using your lunch box, but you are now tasked with working harder push through that perception. You don't need to hold a lunch box to express values you admire either. We are defined by our actions and that which we hold dear. In fact, an old quote by a priest educator comes to mind, it could mold to your expression of values: "One teaches to some extent, not by what you say, not by what you do, not even by who you are, but by the things you love." It's been a while since I've looked at the quote, but its's something like that. So, be what you love, and don't let a lunch box get in the way, weather you carry it or not. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! lekstrom10k 0 #25 August 25, 2007 I am proud of you for using yours. I started back at a job today with mine. My son got it for me when he went into the Marines. He knew I would use it. Do you have a camera phone? I would take a picture of the ass-hole giving you grief doing something stupid like picking his nose or worse. Then paste that picture over Superman. If asked why say "I now have a new hero now and want to be just like him" when I grow up. Bet he will be glad to have S-Man back on the job.Miserable people want to make everyone as miserable as they are.Tell him your glad your life is not as petty as his.
